The original 8.8 was junk in my 88 and the replacement not much better so I put a deposit on a 9 inch from a 81 f150 today,I was suprised that it had 2.75 gears with a 300 and 3 speed with o/d so I will be on the hunt for a pig with 3.50 gears so the speedo will be close. Will have to give up the rear anti lock brakes but I have been driving long enough to not need them, will be yanking it wendsday and its from a one owner truck with less then 100,000 miles.

9 inch is home and I grabbed the mechanical clutch linkage off the donor truck too,do not know if I can make it work on the 88 but I do like mechanical clutch linkage way better then hydraulic. I am thinking about going to a 5 speed in my 88 and since its 2wd I will not be using a truck 5 speed but one from a mustang,I do have a bellhousing from a mid 80s van that was setup for a ***** cylinder and if I have to go hydrulic that will be the way I go. I do not like those hydraulic throw out bearings due to when they break the whole trans needs to come out unlike the system with a ***** cylinder that hangs on the bellhousing that can be repaired on the side of the road, simple and easy to maintain is the way I like to go.
