Hi all

I have an 1986 full size bronco. I am not well versed in the electrical dept. so here goes. The rear window works fine from the drivers position but the key operation doesn't in either direction. I had the panel off the back and have checked the switches best I can using an old stwitich I got from a friend as my guide ( haven't been able to find a wiring diagram on line as yet). the motor which war replaced about a year ago works flawlessly :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> , this time when I went in there to fix the sliding guides I took a real look around the limiting switich checked out with the meter and it wouldn't work from the drivers postion if it was the problem. The key switich seems fine as it gives the same reading I get from from the one that my friend is letting me use. Anyone have a similar problem and what was the cause, most important would did you go about fixing it.

There are two fuses involved with the rear window, one for the driver (fuse 14) switch which has power only when the key is in RUN or ACC. and one that power the rear switch which is hot at all times(fuse 12). Also, the tail gate switch has to return thru the driver switch for ground. You either have a blown fuse, bad power connection to the tail gate switch, or ground return is bad. Since the window doesn't work in either direction from the tail gate switch but does from the driver switch, I would suspect the fuse or path from fuse to tail gate switch (Black with white stripe wire) not the return path which is also used by the diver switch to provide power to the motor. If you have a meter, make sure you have a good ground connection for one lead and probe the black with white stripe wire, you should get 12V. If you don't get 12V then troubleshoot that starting with the fuse (Fuse 12) or just start with fuse 12 before you get to probing :D . Diagram attached.

Good luck,

:)>-

Seabronc, where can I find a readout for which fuses are which? I'm having the same problem with my tailgate window. It works from the dash, but not from the key switch in the back. Which is fuse 12? I've checked all the fuses to see if maybe some are blown, but they're all good. However, there are empty spaces for more fuses and I don't know if maybe the fuse is just plain missing. Do you know where I could get a diagram of the fuse box, which fuse is which, and what fuse does what? (I have a 1981)

Thanks!

Diagram of the fuse block attached. If the fuse is good, get a meter and check the black with white stripe wire on the tailgate switch. You can probe it any where you can get at it inside the gate, just stick the probe into the wire, it should be hot at all times.

Good luck,

Thanks for the info! I got my rear window to work. The wire that goes out of the frame and into the tail gate (the one that is exposed to the outside world whenever the tail gate is open) was corroded through. Looks like it had been cut before and someone had crimped it together and wrapped it with black tape. Where they crimped it, it had corroded in half. I just cut off all the bad wire and connected it together with some new wire and the window worked great!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

<' /> Thanks Seabronc for the information and wiring diagram, it helped out lots. After not get a 12 volt reading at the switch, I then checked fuse 12 had power there. So I went back to the switch and traced it backwards, taking parts off here and there to get find the wiring and see if I had power. the black and white wire runs from the switch out through a rubber grommet and a rubber sleeve into another grommet on the left hand side of the truck behind the left rear light assembly where there is a connector  still no power the b/w wire then goes into a wiring harness and exits out and down by the back of the gas tank. Where guess what, there is another connector(a cluster of three actually). This is where I found my problem. The b/w wire had broken due to vibration I guess right at the back of the connector  . My fix was cut the b/w on the other side of the connector by the gas tank, bear off the ends and twist then together then solder and heat shrink the joint :-B . Ford of course wasn't much help , except for telling a new switch switch would be $450.00(Can.) or so, or I could bring the truck into their service shop to have the problem diagnosed. $-) ka-ching for them. However the key switch now works just fine. I thought I would post this in case anyone else has the same trouble and therefore give a quick place that they could go look for the problem.

Thanks Again

Great post guys. My tailgate window switch hasn't worked in I can't remember how long. Just thought the swicth was bad and left it at that. Wired the switch on the dash to a hot wire so I could put the window down without the key. Now I have something to do this weekend to get me out of cutting the freakin grass.
