Cant get er' into reverse

When Im at a 35*incline, and I try to put my 82' man. tran. into reverse, It will not go. I cant seem to get it to engage. If it is a smaller incline I can, but 35* or more forget it. Do you have any ideas as to what this could be? I just dont understand. Lastly, is it normal that I have to put it into 1st gear to make the engine stop running before I put it into reverse on flat land? Input would be greta thanks.

I don't have a standard Bronco, but it sounds like the syncro mesh is screwed up. Almost sounds like a problem caused by not shifting properly and grinding the gears a little too much.
