okay guys I bought a cheap timing gun and changed my timing. I think i was about 10 degrees after TDC I think I moved it the right way to 10 degrees before TDC however the harmonic balancer is all worn and I can barely see the lines I could only be 5 degrees for all i know about how far inch wise should I have the line away from the pointer thingy. and should i see the timing mark before the pointer or after. Sorry for being a little green in this area. I drew a pic please see the attachment

Here is a link to a very good write up that includes setting the timing. The write up is for an ignition upgrade and "timing bump" that is claimed to improve performance and mileage. I can not vouch for accuracy of those claims having never tried it myself. But the section of the write up that covers setting the timing is very good and includes photographs of the the timing marks and how to make the mechanical adjustment. He even managed to snap a photo as the strobe iluminated the timing mark in relation to the pointer. (that could not have been an easy accomplishment)

Just remember that you are trying to set timing at 10 degrees BTDC and this guy was setting his at 13.5
