Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum, but I'm not a new Bronco owner. I had an '88 XLT several years ago, when I lived in Texas, until I regretfully sold it. However, I purchased my second '88 a couple months ago so I'm back in the saddle again.

If you want to see pictures of my ride, the link to my supermotors.net page is in my signature.

Holy $#~* that's a nice Bronco. Did you buy it like that? or did you spend some extra and make it look that nice?

Welcome to the zone!

TSB 89-22-08 EMW/IMS Applications
Publication Date: NOVEMBER 1, 1989

LIGHT TRUCK: 1985-89 BRONCO
1985-87 BRONCO II
1985-89 ECONOLINE, E-150, F-250, F-350
1985-88 RANGER
1986-87 AEROSTAR
MEDIUM/HEAVY TRUCK: 1988-90 F & B SERIES

ISSUE: The Emission Maintenance Warning "EMW" module operates a light that is located on the instrument panel. For 1985-87 model year vehicles, the light will display the word "EMISSIONS". For 1988-89 model year vehicles, the light will display the words "CHECK ENGINE". When the light is lit, it is indicating that the 60,000 mile emission maintenance should be performed. After the maintenance is performed the EMW module must be reset to zero time. Another type of module is the "IMS" module. This module is not part of the light circuit and does not require maintenance. At a predetermined time, the IMS module directs the EEC IV processor to make a strategy change. A third type of module is the "COMBO" module. This module combines the functions of the IMS and the EMW modules.

ACTION: Refer to the following module application charts for the specific vehicle application and location of the different types of modules.
NOTE: FOR APPLICATIONS NOT LISTED IN THE FOLLOWING MODULE APPLICATION CHARTS, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT IS CONTROLLED BY THE EEC IV PROCESSOR. THESE VEHICLES DO NOT USE THE "EMW" MODULE.

Resetting
  1. Turn the key to the OFF position.
  2. Lightly push a Phillips screwdriver through the 0.2 in. (5mm) diameter hole labeled RESET, and lightly press down and hold it.
  3. While maintaining pressure with the screwdriver, turn the key to the RUN position. The EMW lamp will light and stay lit as long as you keep pressure on the screwdriver. Hold the screwdriver down for about 5 seconds.
  4. Remove the screwdriver. The lamp should go out within 2-5 seconds. If not, repeat Steps 1-3.
  5. Turn the key OFF.
  6. Turn the key to the RUN position. The lamp will light for 2-5 seconds and then go out. If not, repeat the rest procedure.
If the light comes on between 15,000 and 45,000 miles (24,155-72,464 km) or between 75,000 and 105,000 miles (120,773-169,082 km), you'll have to replace the 1000 hour pre-timed module.

Thanks fellas! For the most part, I bought the rig like this. The previous owner put a lot of work into it the few years that he owned it, and I couldn't pass up the price when I found it for sale. He claimed to have put about $14k into the truck, but was only asking $10k. The icing on the cake is that I got it for $8k because he needed to sell it for funds to fix up a new F250 that he had recently purchased.

It was originally a blue Bronco (exterior and interior), but he had the entire body stripped, primed and painted the metallic gray. And if I remember correctly, he also had the "gutters" above the doors and some other places that are notorious for rusting, redone prior to the paint job. He then replaced the blue dash and console with gray ones from a donor/junkyard truck, and then bought the black aftermarket door panels, headliner, carpet and seats. He also added the MSD ignition, stage 2 tranny, remanufactured 302, upgraded gears, custom stereo system, spray-on liner under the carpet, custom lights (front and back), rims and Sirius satellite receiver.

In the couple of months that I've had it, I put on the 3" body lift (I already had the kit), new and complete set of bushings, new Skyjacker shocks, window tint as well as "Premium Shield" paint protection film on the lower-third of the doors, the front third of the hood and the grill.

miesk5, I posted that diagram of the inferred mileage sensor when I was trying to figure out what some connectors were under my dash. I was replacing my ignition switch, when I saw two connectors not attached to anything, and through my research, I learned that one connector was for a non-existent clutch position sensor/switch and the other is for a non-existent inferred mileage sensor. Apparently, for the '88 Bronco the IMS exists only for the 5.8L models.

I recently got the truck running again after it died on me recently. The problem turned out to be the PIP inside the MSD distributor, but I also replaced the ignition switch after I noticed some light charring on a couple of terminals in the old one. It was also giving me problems turning-over, which was due to a very corroded starter cable and questionable starter relay.

Anyhow, my near-term plans are to put in a backseat that I got from the junkyard with some new seat belts. It's in great shape and from another '88, but I had to buy a seat cover to match the interior. I also need to fix the switch for the back window because I can currently only lower it using the key at the tailgate, and I need to change out the speedo gear because I don't think it was done after the new gears and larger tires were added.
