74 302 3 speed on the tree. J shifter dana 20. In 2H when I get my RPM's up and then let off the gas the shift pops out of gear. Only in 2H. When at a constant speed it works fine. When it pops out, the shift easily slides all the way up close to the radio almost like it was in 4L but it is not in any gear. Maybe time for a rebuild? How difficult is it to do for a self proclaimed shade tree mechanic like my self. Cost? Thanks.

Sounds like time to rebuild. If it had a floor shift kit in it, then possibly it would have just needed adjustment, still might try that anyway, but most likely, it needs to be rebuilt. As for doing it yourself, I would say that it is about a 3.25 on a 5 star rating. Cost for having one rebuilt is in the $250 to $400 range. BC Broncos sells the rebuild kit for $150. I would say that if you are confident in your abilities, go for it.

I would recomend trying the fix I posted in the 66-77 General discussion board first. If that doen't work a rebuild is in order.

As to difficulty - it is a simple gearbox. But you need access to a small press, bearing spliter and dail indicatiors.

I don't know if you will have the same issue - but my 75 was not the same as all the diagrams I had. One very tricky bearing to remove.

If you can get it apart - the rebuild is simplle.

If not -take it to a shop - remember - brass drifts are you friends here.
