well i checked ball joints and tie rod ends today i found that the play in my steering is in the box

the shaft that goes from the steering wheel into the box will move back and forth while the tie rods wont move at all.

my truck does sway back and forth sometimes. it will turn either direction, could this be why?

very possible. There is a procedure to tighten the preload on the gearbox but this should only be dont if you are certain there is play. Adjusting or over adjusting the steering box will cause premature wear.

Do you have a manual for the truck? on top of the steering box point up toward the hood should be a stud and lock nut. this is the adjuster

If it has a "rag joint" on the steering shaft, I would check that. Alos check for play in the little universal joints.

There is a whole proceedure for adjusting it as shift1313 mentioned. I am pretty certain that you'll fine directions on how to adjust it on our friend miesk5 's site www.broncolinks.com

good luck with that one.
