The 8.8 has the cover on the back of the differential, the 9 has the bolts on the front. There should also be a tag on one of the bolts. Also the safety compliance sticker on the rear post of the driver door will have an axle code that indicates the differential type and the gears it was shipped from the factory with.

Good luck,

Which is better the 9 inch rearend or the 8.8 rearend for strength wise.
That's like asking which is better, a manual or auto tranny. I prefer the Ford 9" for strength, since it doesn't have the weak C-clips holding in the axleshafts to the differential and the spot-welded axle tubes found on the Ford 8.8" axle. Most folks just run with what they have, especially on the later-modle Broncos with the VSS in the For 8.8". Both axles are used on 1/2-ton trucks and Broncos, and both could stand upgrading if running larger tires over 33" tall.

i would say the 9" for strength, but i either the 9 or 8.8 on my trucks and i have never had a problem with any of them.
