On the way home from a trip to PA, my transmission started banging through the gears, ABS light on, Spedometer stopped at zero, O.D. off light blinking, and my NAV started acting funny. At first i thought it was a problem with the transmission directly, upon some research on this board i think its the VSS. Is this the sensor on the rear Diff? I have a 96 5.8 automatic, the part autozone game me looked nothing like the senor i removed from the rear. Am i in the wrong spot or did they give me the wrong sensor? in addition, any idea why this happened? I was under the impression that this isnt a sensor that wears out. any info is appreciated

it could be the sensor because mine has the same sensor and when my rear end blew the speedo went crazy. i would get a sensor from a ford dealer. their is just something about autozone electrical parts that i just dont' trust. oil-filter oil ok but not somthing important such as a speed sensor or other calibrated sensor. :)>-

Azone can read your code & give you a "print-out" ....!

(You will prob. have more than (1) code to read)......THEN it's up to you..!

Remember, Auto parts stores computers are "garbage in/out" ..!

If you don't supply the right info. on your veh. ....you WILL get a wrong part.

MOST of the parts counter code read-outs cannot be understood by you or the counterperson (they're not trained troubleshooters) .....so it's best to have an SAE mech. look at it.

VSS part # from Ford is F85Z-2L373-AC. Had to get one when me and a buddy adapted a VSS to my rear Dana 60 that replaced the 8.8.
