ok. so my 88 bronco II will not go in gear. i was driving down the road and i put it in 5th gear. i started going up a hill so i went to drop it into 4th and it wouldnt come out of 5th i pulled over and turned the truck off to see if it would come out then.. AND NO it was stuck. i had to take off in 5th gear.. I KNOW it ate up the clutch but i was wondering what is wrong besides that. now that it is parked in the yard it will not go IN gear its out i dont know how it came out but its out. and i can start the truck and i can put it in what it feels like gear but its wont go anywhere even when i let off the clutch it just sits there . even when i turn the truck off put it in gear and start it. it will not move. i dont know whats wrong and i dont know what to do. ppl tell me its the clutch and ppl tell me its the tranny and i just dont freaking know. i was wondering if anyone has a clue what i need to do without blowing 5/600 dollars at a shop. please help meee. thank you for reading this and thanks anyway if you dont know

to start off, the site would never get big if nobody ever uses it. it usually takes a couple of days for somebody who's had an experience similar to yours to respond, since the majority of users are north american and have normal working lives.

now then. as per your problem, i know exactly what's wrong, but the chances of fixing it with replacement parts is slim to none. the problem is in the latter section of the transmission, after the gears towards the center of the case. there's a series of meshing gears there that have a separating ring or clamp. this clamp, when under severe loads or wear, can get lodged between the two gears and cause the shifter to get stuck also. mine got stuck in first gear because i was playing too hard with low gear, and thus it "locked" in first. i managed to get the shifter out of first, but the tranny was still in gear. putting the shifter in another gear just jammed everything and the truck would not move.

i've had the same situation happen to me, and i tore the tranny completely apart to find the cause. in an auto parts store, i could not find the small little ring that goes between the gears (and gets eaten up and jammed between them). i opted for a "rebuilt" transmission, but the first was a lemon (autozone imported one from a shop). get ready for a weekender, and a new or rebuilt tranny. a good bet is to upgrade from an FM 146 to an M50D-R1 from a 4.0 vehicle.

that about does it for me, as i'm currently in college at the time (in class while typing). just remember to be patient and understanding on this site, and you'll get what you need to get the job done.

Manually tranny? Take it out yourself and look in it. Not as hard as you may think. Easy weekend job just to take it out, open it up, and look for yourself. Look for worn gears, etc., or loose shifting (or wiggling).

Related problem with my 89 B II, 2.9ltr 5spd. It was hard to shift in all gears, but with motor off would shift smooth. Long story short, internal ***** cylinder was the problem. While I was in there (weekend project of dropping tranny, shafts, xfer case, etc), changed clutch, pressure plate, and pilot bearing. Shifts smooth, runs great.
