hi, iam new to this forum, i have been restoring my 1993 ford bronco eddie bauer with the 5.8 in it, i had the engine completely rebuilt 40,000 miles ago, and the transmission rebuilt less than a thousand miles ago, so we can rule those factors out, my problem is, when i start my truck, starts great everythings is fine, but when i shift from park to drive or park to reverse it doesnt go into gear right away after about maybe a seconds it kicks in and boy does it kick it, hard, iam worried this is cause problems with my transmission, but i dont want that, i just spend over 1400 getting it rebuilt, another problem i have noticed is when i start it , put it in gear after it klunks! and when i turn to leave something pops loud, iam hoping it is either the u-joints or someone siimple, please help!!!!

How's the fluid level? That could be the cause of your delayed shift.

Did you check for play in driveshaft? u-joints could be worn.

you need to look for play in the joints where one part moves more than another. the Double cardan joints can wear in various places then cause alot of noises and problems. if you have any concerns about your drive shaft a good preventative measure is to take it to a shop and have them Re and Re the whole thing with new u joints, and a re greasing the pivot points.

I doubt that is a transmission problem. More than likely it is in the drive train from the tranny back. Perhaps universal joints or rear end gears. Crawl under neath and see if you have play in the drive shaft.

Good luck,

:)>-

i found very very very little play not rlly enough for it to make it react the way it does, i will replace the u joints in the front and rear of the drive shaft, even if its not those its time for new ones ne ways 230000 miles is long enough, haha, thanks for your posting, do u suggest any other answers to my problem other than the u joints?

I had the same problem with mine. Ended up being the rear end. The gears were torn up. Cant hurt to take the cover off and take a look.

if i remember right ford wanted $189 for the entire set, had to replace everthing, had to go back twice because there was suppose to be shims and they were missing then ended up getting the wrong ones, after that local junk yard sold me a whole rear end for $80 off a truck with low miles. Had to many arguements with the dealer about missing parts.

how does the truck run otherwise? does it idle correctly? if no, maybe test your throttle position sensor.

when you say it pops while turning. is this from the front or rear?

If you only have 800 miles on a trans rebuild, take it back and have them tell you what the problem is.

Popping noise while turning may be your front hubs partially engaged. How long since they were serviced?

Good luck,

dude i cant even tell u when they were last seriviced, the truck sat in storage for over 7 yrs, it has the automotic hubs, but the popping is coming from the rear of the truck...if i bought the rebuild kit for the rear-end, is is very difficult to install myself? i have a shit load of tools but are there any special ones i would need? if i could i would rather me install it than to pay 500 bucks to get it put in by someone else, just like the u-joints

OK, must have missed the part about it coming from the rear. Here is a link to a place that sells gears and believes that you can do it yourself, http://www.ringpinion.com/ . They provide all the technical support you need.

You might want to consider changing those auto hubs to manuals. Autos have a bad reputation of failing you when you need them the most. They will definately not engage if you are already stuck when you think of engaging them  .

Good luck,

:)>-
