yeah after looking at all of that, maybe it would be best to just have it done by someone, just in-case u kno? does anyone have any idea what it would cost to have the rear end rebuilt and have new u-joints installed?, iam afraid if i continue to drive this truck that i could be harming the transmission, and thats the last thing i want to do

transmission should take it in stride, I would look at doing the joints as soon as you can being as they are cheap and a big help when done right.

then if the problem persists look at the rear end. I found on my 81 the nut on my diff input shaft had backed off and it was making my internals really sloppy. I tightened the nut and used lock tight but the damage had been done. about a year later the rear end gears chipped and shattered after I sold it to a guy.

Sounds like you got everything in order.

You said the truck had been sitting for a long time. The noise in the rear could be the posi-units cones or plates sticking. If you haven't done it already it would be a good idea to drain the posi and refill with a good quality **** and a posi additive. If you do remember to drive in some figure 8s to displace the **** and recheck the level.

It may take care of the problem for a few bucks and you won't need that rebuild.

Good luck

ok so i took the bronco to ammco here in cincinatti, paid 85 bucks for them to diagnose my problem, such as delayed shift, clunkin when put in gear, but i just had tranny overhauled not 1,000 miles ago, they didnt rlly give me the correct answer i was looking for such as what exactly my problem is, they told me they need to do a transmissiion pressure test, which is another 85 bucks, also, they need to take the transfer case out and examine it, which is 350 bucks and! they need to take the rear diff aparrt and examine that which is 400 bucks, i actually know less than i did before i took it there, any suggestions on what i do?

DO NOT DRIVE IT TO FL!

OK, I used all caps so you can learn from my mistake. I had a u-joint problem that i knew about and figured I would get to it after I moved from WI to KS. Well, 580 miles into my trip the vibrations caused by the bad u-joints actually loosened my transfer case enough to drop it from its mounts. So, after paying to get it towed the last 120 miles, then replacing the U-joionts along with the transfer case I really wished I had fixed it first.

I'm a little surprised that no one suggested putting it in 4X4, engaging the front hubs, and dropping the rear drive shaft. Then take it for a spin as a test.

Also isn't there a slip joint that dries out, and needs to be packed with grease once in a while that may contribute to the clunking?

Also while you have it out, you can better examine the U joints, we have a post on this site for the R&R of them with a C-Clamp joint press. BTW you can borrow a press from autozone, it would make the job easier.

can i gain anything from installing a new distributor? also, i have the 351 in my 93 bronco, and right at the end of the valve cover on the drivers side closest to the firewall there seems to be like a filter or something which is leaking some oil, any suggestions on that? think i could just put some silicon around it or will it get to hot?
