i just got a 78 bronco, with a 400, and i havent been able to get her started. I replaced the battery, and it tries to start, but won't fire. my buddy's first thought was that it's the timing, could this be my problem? also, we noticed that when you step on the gas, the flap on top of the carb doesn't flap open. we think this might also be the problem, but none of us have ever worked with carbs before, so we really have no idea. any help would be sweet, thanks!!

Well, that flap on top of the carb is the choke plate and it should be closed when the engine is cold. Have you checked for spark? Have you checked to see if you are getting gas?

Good luck,

:)>-

---"first thought was that it's the timing"--

Rotate crank 'til mark is 7 deg. past top dead center. (on pointer)

Check that distrib. rotor is pointing at #1 plug-wire (in the cap)

---"flap on top of the carb doesn't flap open"--

That would be the choke flap....the throttle butterfly is deeper down.

Open the choke by hand or block it open with a (large) screwdriver.

Dribble in some gas or better, use some starting fluid. (either)

Now it should start...assuming you have spark & fuel press.

DO NOT leave your face over the carb while cranking... b-(
