ok i have a 91 ford bronco with a 5.0 in it 4x4. now just recently i noticed i was having to turn to key (what seemed to be more then i had been) to get the bronco to start. now i went to start it up not thinking much of it and it wouldn't start plus all the give the key/ignition had wasn't there either. we ended up getting the bronco started so i could get it home and when i got home the key wouldn't shut it off. i ended up taking the battery off and it STILL ran. i ended up having to disconnect a wire to the alt to get it to shut off. now my questions are..... is there someone online i can go to, to look at a wiring diagram of the steering column (i think i have a idea but wouldn't mind seeing it first before i take it apart) and how is the dash panel connected (does it have screws cause i didn't see any or does it clip in or what)?

I just had this issue. This *** metal piece that connects the key to the rod, broke. The rod moves down the steering shaft to an ignition switch. I was able to get mine to start, but couldn't shift out of park. This is apparently a common problem.

If you google, you'll find a write up. It was too much for me, so I had a shop do it. $200.

Adam is most likely correct. You could do a quick check by watching the push rod while you turn the key. There should be no slack.

The battery is only for starting the vehicle and supplying momentary short falls of the alternator. It is the alternators function to supply all normal loads.

Another possibility, if the link seems to check out OK, is the ignition switch position adjustment. http://broncozone.com/topic/7243-ignition-switch-adjustment-proceedure/

This is the best source for diagrams for your truck. You can find them on eBay by searching on "Ford Bronco EVTM", no quotes and then selecting one for your year truck.

Good luck,

Shift Indicator Adjustment in 92-96

Source: by Steve83 (Steve, That dirty old truck) at http://www.supermotors.net/registry/media/434182

shiftercableadjustments.jpg

Shift Cable Adjustment

BEFORE BEGINNING, inspect items #26, 27, 28, & 34 in this diagram for looseness:

steeringcolumn92up.jpg

CAUTION: Under no circumstances should the cable be adjusted in any position other than D (drive) for the C6 transmission (7003) or (D) (overdrive) for the E4OD transmission.

1. From inside the vehicle, place the transmission range selector lever in the DRIVE position (C6) or the OVERDRIVE position (4R70W and E4OD). Hang an improvised three-pound weight (#1) on the transmission range selector lever (#2).

2. Raise vehicle on a hoist and position suitable safety stands under vehicle.

3. Remove the shift cable (#5) from the transmission lever ball stud.

4. Pull down the lock tab on the shift cable body.

5. Position the transmission range selector lever (#2) in the DRIVE position (C6) or the OVERDRIVE position (E4OD). This is three detents from the front-most lever position with the first position counting as one.

6. Connect the cable end fitting to the transmission lever ball stud.

7. Push up on the lock tab to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position.

8. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle from hoist. Remove the three-pound weight from the transmission range selector lever.

9. After making the adjustment, check for park engagement. Check the transmission range selector lever in all detent positions with the engine (6007) running to make sure correct detent/transmission actions. Readjust if necessary.

Shift Indicator Cable

1. Remove the four screws from the lower steering column shroud. Remove the lower steering column shroud.

2. Rotate transmission range selector lever clockwise until it bottoms out in first gear.

3. Rotate transmission range selector lever counterclockwise three detents (overdrive position).

4. Hang a three pound weight on the transmission range selector lever.

5. Center pointer in the middle of D if equipped with C6 transmission, or (D) if equipped with E4OD transmission, by rotating the thumbwheel located on right-hand side of steering column actuator housing.

yo, I don't sell parts, I just help Jeff's and others sell the parts,

For the ind cable; try LMC or

Chris had same prob;

picture-001.jpg

Got a new one from Ford, about 20 bucks, and the quality of this one is much better, the cable is protected much better, and the spring of course, has spring to it

try a yard search or local tranny shop to save some $

same for switch

GL!
