Normally, when changing the ratio you will get a "gear set", which is the ring gear and the pinion gear together. This is for each axle, so you would need two "sets" for your 4wd Bronco. You may also need the installation kit for each axle, which includes the necessary shims, bearings, gasket, etc. depending on how much needs to be replaced. If you do the rear axle only, I would remove the front driveshaft so there's no chance of going into 4wd and damaging the t-case or axles. If you have the Ford 8.8" rear axle, I would have a reputable shop do the gear swap, since it's critical to get the backlash and other setting just right. One final note, you may need a new carrier for the ring gear, at least in the front axle, if goin to 4.11's. Just ask the shop or the tech person at Summit or Jeg's where you buy the parts.

Just to add a little. In reference to your question about only changing the back gear ratio. as long as you don't use 4x4 you would be able to run just fine, but if you put it in 4x4 that way you will have an unpleasant experience.

So I would suggest you don't do that or unhook your front driveshaft. If you can't afford a front set and rear set at the same time, I would suggest that you wait till you have both sets before converting.

Good luck,

:)>-

To add on here, yes, you will have buy a new a new carrier as there is a split on ring carrier sizes between 3.50 and 4.11. I would let a shop do this set up. I have heard of people doing gears themselves before and not getting it just right. Next thing the bought was a whole new axle since theirs either locked up or exploded due to not setting the backlash up right. I'd rather pay extra, get it done right with a warrenty, then pay later for a new axle and a new set of gears.

i don't know how you are all set up for this kind of thing, but i looked at a 78 1/2 4x4 saturday with a blown motor good trans and t-case completly rusted out but it had 4.10's frnt and rear and the fella only wanted 250 obo.

might want to look around a little might find you more than just some gears for about the price it'll cost you.
