I tried a few searches, but couldn't find anything in this regards.

I'm in a heated dispute with my eldest son over this and would like some comments if possible.

I have a '86 full size Bronco that I have had since brad new. The front differential has gone out. (I think)

Meaning that it started like a bad universal joint noise, then graduated to a constant and much louder noise comming from the front differential.

I have removed the short shaft between the transfer case and the diff. to ensure it's not U-joint.

My son isists that, since I do not use the 4wheel, (and haven't but one time back in '86) that I can just pull out the two axles and that would be ALL I would have to do.

Without the explanations of why I just don't get the front differential overhauled, the question here would be:

Is it possible Just to pull the 2 front axles out without doing too much of any thing else?

Thanks

if you have not used the 4wd since 1986 then I can save you alot of trouble.

IT IS NOT YOUR FRONT END.

front diff and axle and axle shafts only spin when the transfer case and hubs are engaged, if they are not engaged then they are not the source of the problem.

so pulling all that stuff out would not solve your problem and be a HUGE WASTE of time.

your looking at either A.the noise is coming from elsewhere, or B. your wheel bearings are gone.

Thanks for the reply Krafty

Didn't even think of the obvious. I haven't even driven it in about a year.

I think my son was trying to pull a fast one on me. ( he wants it since it only has under 40K miles)

I'll check the bearings to see if that is the cause, it possible is. Just about everthing on it is still original. And I know the bearings are.

Thanks again.
