Oh winternats! I was thinking I might be able to take a drive out to Pomona and connect with people I only know on the forum but there is no way for me to handle a crowd of that size. I get winded taking a trip to the refrig.

Peoply. I like it short, descriptive, works for me. I have a few new words for covid but they will be relegated to the X rated section of the dictionary

How did the weekend go?

I am going to prevail upon others to attempt to get the B2 to smog. Last time on the rollers it would have passed except for high NOX. Will back the timing down at least 5 degrees and throw a bottle of cataclean at it. Had an old 94 500SL that would only smog if I threw a bottle at it about three days before the test. Once I get the plates on it when my granddaughter is home for the summer I can have her drive it while I am poking around the break out box. May find the 41 culprit.

Went ok for the 1st weekend, ran a couple 5.82’s made the show 24 cars for a 16 car show, so that was good, 2 engine swaps and 5 complete overhauls = sore and tired, but still fun
Knocked out in the 1st round, ready for pomona!

Its kind of funny, I had a 92 sl for 6months a couple years ago. (Bucket list car) very cool, don’t want another.
More needy than an old Jag!
Let me know when you get back on the B-II and we will see if we can get you through it!
Good luck with smog,
Cheers

Too bad about the first round.

Yes extremely needy. Mercedes is fine until the first domino drops and then the rest will be dropping soon. I am second generation ***** out of southern Germany. I have worked on Mercedes, driven them, owned them and right now if you pull a German scheissvagon into my driveway I will not even check the oil on it.

All that engine work sounds expensive, I am assuming it is a Donovan.

This lung surgery is beyond a doubt the worst thing I have ever dealt with. I can't do anything for fear of doing damage, and I am so wiped out that I can barely move, I am panting like a dog just sitting at the computer. Have a friend coming over when he has a chance to reset the timing. I don't want to go too far not knowing how negatively it might affect the other readings. Like walking a tightrope. If he has the time maybe we can check TDC to see if it is really TDC.

Just take it easy Grumpy. You had a serious operation and it will take awhile before you will get your weight and energy back. We know its hard to not be able to do anything--when we are used to doing for ourself. I have a friend in Eureka. Maybe you live close to him ad he could help you out,His name is Harry Washburn. He;s my Viet Nam big brother--

Make sure you take it easy!

The tuner got lots of data, any info is good.

Laying in bed, which apparently is my only allowable activity, I was thinking. Looked up the fuel requirements for the B2 and it requires regular. I have been pumping premium in to it. I know that the lower the octane number the faster the fuel burns, question is does it also burn cooler and is the premium fuel bumping up my NOX readings?

If there is a chance of some weird off the wall happening, it will happen to me!

Hope your feeling better Grumpy. It won,t be long before you be feeling yourself again and be able to do some tinkering. Get well soon.

Hey Grumpy, fuel octane rating is primarily about resistance to spontaneous combustion from high pressure (detonation), I'm not too sure about burn speed. Its very unlikely that high octane rating will negatively affect NOx production. I still think its lean, which will definitely affect NOx. Your thought with knocking the timing back a bit is good, (Should cool the combustion a bit) Just a note though, it will reduce power as well and the load change might bring your HC\CO numbers up. I think it might get you through the test though.
Good luck and get better.
Cheers

Bronco, I am turning this thing over to a friend that is going to look at it in his spare time. The further I get along in my healing process the more I am willing to admit that the daily activities are restricted to anything that includes a recliner. Damn I hate this. Anyway tried once again to get it smogged and something popped up that may help. Oh dropped the timing from 10 to 4.

the readings are as follows 15 MPH 2000 RPM CO.2 meas 16.0. O2 meas 0.1. HC max 86, meas 58. CO max 0.51, meas 0.03. NOX max 711 meas 636.
25 MPH 1969 RPM 15.3 0.1 72 27 0.65 0.01 875 1841!!!

Hopefully the shorthand comes through readable. What I observe is that the RPM's are within 30 but the speed is 10 MPH faster meaning that the throttle is wider open and theoretically manifold vacuum is down. If I am interpreting this correctly what ever should be richening the mixture as manifold vacuum is going down isn't. If anything in your experience might shed light on this I will Pass it along.

Thanks
Dwight

Hey Grumpy, I have heard that the road back from covid can be long, (sorry)
She is definitely lean, (>01 CO) the lower RPM just means it upshifted. (Means more load) Should have richened.
I know you've been through the parts mill with this thing.
My thought is the injector flowrate doesn't match the PCM software perfectly.
Not sure what the solution is other than find a used pcm and injector set from a running 2.9L, or a ton of research and verify the PCM calibration and injector flowrates, (There are many variations out there.)
Hope that helps, take care!
Cheers
(Off to Pomona tomorrow)

I am not thankful for as much as I should be, but I am certainly thankful that all those emissions numbers just as well be chinese to me.

Well I am almost back to the world of the living. Next Monday I a seeing a cardiologist because I have a leaking heart valve I did not even know I had and my GP wants to find out if it is still in the allowable range, if not ??? Wednesday I am seeing a pulmonary specialist to see where I am in my recovery. My only question is what can I do and not do, maybe I can actually do some small things and rebuild my stamina to some extent. Took a shower this morning and had to sit down for about 10 minutes to catch my breath before I could brush my teeth.

Anyway I picked up the bronco from my friend, he managed to get it smogged, didn't have a chance to ask him how as he was busy. Driving it home at about the 20 mile mark it triggered the light. Haven't plugged the code reader into it but my bet is it is about 98 percent the 41. Good news is that I am not against the wall I can finish the registration and have until the end of summer to find the cause of the 41.

Granddaughter won't be home until July but in the mean time I can get my daughter to drive it for me occasionally while I poke and prod the break out box if I know what to look for. It seems to trigger when you close the throttle which can mean high vacuum to something or low fuel pressure somewhere else.

Unless I need heart surgery!

I didn't get it through smog my friend did while I was romancing a recliner. The numbers don't add up but it passed so nothing else matters. 0.01 CO with 678 at 15 and 268 at 25 NOX? Oh well, have till September to sort it out.

Good luck in Phoenix, you are in a tough class.

Thinking back to my drag racing days when it was run what you brung. '62 march meet at famossa in Bakerspatch I took A modified sports with a hillborn injected small block chev in a 1900# Kellison. My main competition took his second to last round but broke something going through the eyes so my last pass was a single. Last round of #5 eliminator we were looking good but my driver had left the fuel on and the tank was above the engine, need I say more? After all these years I still remember Donnies last run, I believe he was in the Zuchel-Fuller-Purdomme car. He cranked a 7.14 and everyone gasped, he was almost in the 6es. Door slammers are what in the 5's now?

Now you spend hours going over computer printouts looking for a tenth of a second here and something else there, Whole different world.

I miss the 60's, what I remember of them through the alcohol fog. I am surprised I survived them
