OKay guys, I have noticed that my truck is rather gutless. I know I need a new carb but the engin is acutally fairly new running stock accessories except for flowmaster muffler, no smog pump or ac pump. Someone mentioned that my cat might be clogged after 22 years of operation. Is there any way to tell if this might be a problem, or is it a replacement type situation or can I just hollow it out?

Your 85 actually has two cats. A "pre-cat" first, then a 2nd one behind it. Signs of it being clogged can be a rotten egg / sulphur smell, or a noticeable loss of power. When I did the exhaust system on my 84 Bronco, both cats fell out as soon as I removed the stock muffler!!! I went with a single, aftermarket universal cat and a si/do Flowmaster. If your cat is the original model, it could very well be clogged or rusted and not functioning right. Any vacuum leaks or a clogged fuel filter, need of a tune-up or an internal motor problem, even a slipping transmission, can also cause power loss. JSm84

if it is a new cat that you need, take a look at summit hi flow street legal cats. there good for 3-5 HP over stock. combine that with a magna flow with headers and dual exhaust and your adding 10-15+ HP over stock, plus its a nice deep throaty sound, not like the hollow tin can sound you get with the flowmasters.

2 1/2" would be a great size for a 4x4

Well I already have the flow master so i guess rattling can sound it is. I am replacing the cat tomorrow (i only have one, i know it is not stock) but it looks to be original or pretty darn old. The motor only has a few thousand miles on it but still seems under powered and when I drive to the mountains it feels like it is choking out. So with the new cat, which will help in more ways than one, I will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the exhaust is clear. Then I can say almost for sure that it is the two bbl carb that I rebuilt that is the problem. Also I still have the original air cleaner that only sucks air in through the little hose from the front of the vehicle. Is this actually enough air or should i get a new one that is open all around. Hopefully I can get all the bugs out of this thing so I can enjoy it instead of worrying about it all the time

 Usually if you drive around for awhile night is the best time Drive it around awhile then put it in park leave it running & look under neath at the CAT. it they are plugged or plugging up the will glow RED!!!!!!! Then Yep get it off ASAP! make sure the bronco dont roll on you while looking underneath..

Also Check your Timing See where it is at that could be the culpert that is making it run sluggish & over heating the CAT!..

I'm not sure about where you are but here in Virginia most of the muffler shops with give you a "free apraisal" and tell you if your cat or cats are bad. The only problem is if you have two or more they WILL NOT tell you which one because then most people will hallow that one out and call it good. What they don't get is if you don't tell them then they hallow all of them out. But anyways, that would be an option if you wanted, see if a shop with check them for you. Also, like what was mentioned before, if you're getting a rotten egg smell that's a good indication that they're going out...

I thought (and please somebody correct me if I'm wrong) it was 10 Degrees BEFORE top dead center. You may want to advance or ****** to your liking though.

Yes that is correct snowman74 You want the engine to fire before top dead center anything after TDC is wasted power . The explosion of the gas in the cylinder creating pressure is what drives the piston down the more pressure the more power . If its already on its way down youve lost power so definately want it to be BTDC :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
