i have a 4 barrell holley carb. with an edlebrok intake and when i go to sart the truck it will not start or run with the choke closed. i used to have to open the choke wide open and get it runnign and wait until it warms up and then i could close the choke and it would be fine. but now i cannot start it unless the choke is barely open. it will not run if it is closed or all the way open. it has to be right in the middle for it to even start.

what can i do to fix this problem. when i go to drive the truck it will start to bog out. unless i hammer it. if i go more than idle it will bog out.

I would personally go thru and make sure there are no vacuum leaks for starters

im assuming this is an electric choke?

To be honest with you, that sounds like the idle mixture adjustment. The choke, when closed should just have about a 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch open. It should be running on the idle ports only not the jets. Having to have it wide open indicates it was way too rich and If it has to be slammed tight then it is probably running too lean. If you haven't been fiddling with the idle mixture screws, then a rebuild kit and a thorough cleaning including making sure the idle slots are not plugged with crap.

There is more detail to be mentioned, but that would be several pages long. I'd suggest getting a rebuild kit and a gallon of carb cleaner, the kind you soak the parts in for a few days. You can get it at most real parts suppliers, probably not some place like Auto Zone. If you do a search on the net for Holley carburetor adjustment, you should find some good info to read.

Good luck,

:)>-

well it was sitting in someones yard for over a year. just sitting and i got it running just by putting a battery in and connecting a fuseable link. it started right up.

i did spray some carb and choke cleaner in it while it was running and i do plan on using seafoam on it.

its like if its wide open it wont run, and if its closed all the way it wont run. but right in the middle it will.

That stuff will not free up clogged idle ports and the slots that provide fuel between idle and normal running. If it sat for a year with gas in the carb, it is most likely all gummed up inside the carb and a thorough breakdown, cleaning and rebuild is in order. Or a new carb. The products you are planning on using are good for an occasional maintenance quick clean when the engine is running properly. It is not that hard to do a rebuild, the instructions come with the kit, but it does need to have the parts setting in carb cleaner solution for a day or two to get the gum out and then the idle ports and transition slots may still need some attention.

Try this link http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/1999/12/holley/index.php

Also do a Google search on "Holley carb rebuild", no quotes. You will get more info on doing it than your can stand.

Good luck,
