I just had my AOD rebuilt. bought the car with 140k miles on it and overdrive was out. Had the AOD rebuild at the cheapest tranny guy I could find (ok, mistake number 1 . . . ) However, I got it back and a few weeks later it overheated, started smoking and went out. Took it back and he rebuilt it again, new valve body etc. got it back and two days later, same thing. . .

I purchased a rather large aux cooler in preparation for the new transmission. The mechanic recommended that I use the aux ONLY, so he bypassed the radiator.

Currently it is blown again and I have to take it back to this guy to get a new one. He has said it must be the core and that he was going to get me a new core for it and see what happens.

Questions:

Should I have him put in the e40D instead? I assume it will bolt right up

Should I install a radiator for the 460 I am planning on installing someday in hopes of eliminating the colling issue?

If I stick with the AOD, should I install the 460 capable radiator and have him run the colling through the radiator?

What could be causing this issue assuming that the cooling is sufficient through only the aux cooler?

Thanks!

Engine temp gets a little warm in traffic in 100 degrees with the AC blasting. . . I'd call that ok. . .

I have not checked the hoses, but that is on the table for replacement prior the the third rebuild

Shifted great, short, very subtle shifting, this is a 1990 and it is not electonic. would that still have "relearn"?

I took it in because the OD was out completly and that is what keeps blowing out upon successive rebuilds.

He said he is getting me a new core and rebuilding that. Could that solve the problem? What in the "core" could be bad?

Chatted with father in law today he suggested maybe it was a bad pump that could cause this.

any ideas?
