I purchased a salvaged 89 Bronco and I'm trying to determine the engine size. The VIN comes up with a 302, but there are some other signs that point toward it being a 351. The air intake says 5.8L, but that is just a sticker. The EGR runs down to the exhaust manifold which I'm told means it is a 351 (they said the 302 has the EGR running from the intake), but i'm not 100% I trust my source on that one. It has a three speed transmission (I assume from my reading this is the C6) that from what I read only comes on the 351. Can anyone provide information on this?

Just to add a second newbie question... The door jam identifies the axle code as "19" which is not limited slip. When I am in 4WD does the Bronco lock the differential so I have power at all four wheels, or if I lose traction at one is it going to push all the power to the slipping wheel?

The C6 is available with both engines. The 302 does have an EGR line to the exhaust, just upstream of the catalytic converter. Pictures would probably help.

In 4wd, all that happens is the front and rear driveshaft rotate. With open differentials, only one wheel on each axle will spin in a loss-of-traction scenario. Though, having that one front wheel spinning is enough to help in many cases.

Welcome to the Zone :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> . Axle code 19 is an open differential with, 3.54 gear in it. However, the carrier and gearing could have been changed by a previous owner. Limited slip differential code starts with L, ie L9 and if both differentials are limited slip the code would be L92. So, if your gearing is stock, then you have standard open differentials. There should be a tag attached to one of the differential cover bolts that would probably have been removed if the gears were changed.

As far as the C6 it could come on most any Ford engine. If it is a 3 speed, the dash will have PRND23 on the shift indicator, again someone hasn't changed the transmission.

Good luck,
