I'm at wits end here. I picked up a 78 460, np 435, np 205 about 3 weeks ago. I drove it for about 3 days and then started to encounter tranny trouble, so after messing around with fluids and clutch pedal travel without any luck i finally took it to the local tranny specialist to see what he had to say. After tearing my truck apart he found that the clutch was binding up against the iside of the bellhousing which seemed odd to me. So, after decoding my VIN i found that the truck was originally a 351M, but as far as I've read (correct me if I'm wrong) the bellhousings on all the 78's were the same? So what I need to know is what clutch can I put into this housing that will still work or is there a larger housing that will still bolt up to my 460 and the gearbox without any other problems? Now, to address the next question that I'm sure somebody will ask, the serial numbers a re almost completely worn off the block so I'm not 100% of the motor year, but the previous owner was certain is was from a 78 econoline.

Any help would be great, I really want to get my beast back on the road ASAP!

thanks

sounds to me like you should yank out the clutch and have a look, what exactly is binding, I assume the pressure plate. make sure it was installed correctly, take some measurements and go to you local parts store, ask for a clutch and pressure plate for your truck, measure them and compare.

Well, its been about 3 weeks of headaches and alot of people who 'think' they know what will work only for me to find out otherwise. I know the kit from JBG will work, but I'm in Canada and with the border the way it is and the difference in dollar values I'm trying to avoid going that route if I can. I'm starting to lean toward going to a c-6 setup with a hurst floor shift. Now this idea has presented a few other problems, such as tranny mounts and driveshaft lengths. I'd appreciate anyones input on the situation.

Thanks

The 460 and 351m bellhousings are the same, but sounds like the wrong size flywheel.
