hey guys, i bought a haynes manual and i was gonna check and make sure i had the firing order correct. it says in the book that the black terminal on the distributor cap is where the number one spark plug is. BUT, their is not black terminal on the cap? what do i do? thanks
do you know who made the cap? there should be some indication of where #1 is. If not I believe you can set your #1 cylinder to TDC and where your rotor points should be #1. (someone please correct me if I am wrong) I hate to say this but I had the same problem with my old chevy... yep chevy... piece of crap none the less. if your timing is way out it will cause this problem or if your wires are mixed up... when you did drive it did it have good power?

Adeezy,

Just because you hear the pump running doesn't mean that it's working the way it's suppose to. All pumps should have some information on how much pressure they put out. You should test it at the engine block. There are diaphragm in em that may have holes or be completely torn and or springs that can wear out. If it's original or not recently replaced it still may be your culprit.. Also, would check the charging system to see if your alternator/generator is putting out the right voltage and while your at it check the battery for dead cells. Even it doesn't appear to be low juice it could be just enough to fool you.

Sorry for the spelling.

should be able to tell by the retaining clips. look at the picture in the book to see where #1 is in relation to the clips.

In my experiance you may find a #1 risen lettering on the cap small and in a precarious place, that doesn't mean the caps on right to start. Caps, older ones anyway, can be turned around 180 so you may see your number one in the wrong place. If you know where your number one wire is then I would follow it back to the cap and mark the cap. Hope that doesn't sound confusing. Once you've discovered number one mark the spot on your distributor, something removable like white out. Take your cap off and turn your HBalancer until your rotor is pointing at that mark. Take your number one plug out and if your piston is up then it's TDC. If its down rotate 180 HBalancer to TDC. Then check your timing marks, they should be relatively close. If your rotor is not pointing to what you have marked as number 1 then you've probably found your problem. I would check firing order in this process just for GP. I would recommend you check your engine numbers/distributor/HBalancer/Timing marks to see if it's what you think it is before you start this process. Different stuff means different TDC/Timing/Firing ect.... I've seen hacks use parts from all kinds of stuff to get a vehicle running which may cause issues. I've even had to create my on Timing marks on HBalancers in order to figure problems out.
