So i put a 78 460 in my 83 full size. I got a bell housing to put the T-19 4 speed to it but the problem is when the trans is mounted to the motor it wont crank. The motor spins freely when the trans is off but together its solid. What could cuase this to happen?

Thanks Matt

does it turn freely with the starter out ? flywheel may be locked against it.Is your clutch disengaging completely ? When you bolt the tranny to the engine does it go together easily or do you have to use the bolts to get the trans completely mated to the engine ? With the trans in gear ofcourse the clutch could prevent the engine from turning but with the trans in neutral the clutch would not matter. If the trans doesnt go all the way against the engine freely then the pilot bushing/bearing may be too small for the input shaft to go into therefore causing binding in the trans and engine,or the input shaft may be too long and be doing the same binding. You may want to try loosening the bolts holding the trans to the bell housing some and try to turn engine using a socket on the front crankshaft bolt. Loosen a little try to turn engine repeat untill engine turns freely.

So do to some things that have come up i have not had time to work on the truck, but i have talk to some people and think i have it figered out. I have a new prosses 4-speed i think due to the fact that it has an alumminum top cover i was told that this would not work with the 460. Now i think thats right but not a 100%. So if i look for a new trans it should work with a T-18/19 but i do not know what the differens are for the t-18 or t-19 and whitch would be better. Any help is welcome.

thanks Matt
