My truck is really starting to give me a lot of problems and I figure after 200k + that this engine has seen its better miles. So I want to rebuild a 302 for a replacement. The only problem is I currently live in a second story apartment. I was wondering how much does a 302 short-block (pistons, crank, cam and block) weigh? Also do you guys think it would be possible, for a few guys, to carry it up and down the stairs?

Weight should be right about 500 pounds. They can be moved but the problem is finding a good hand hold for several people. I would try to rig something with two poles, metal poles, that two people could shoulder front and back, that way you use your legs to lift and carry it. A chain attachment like those used on engine hoysts to bolt to the intake would be the best way to connect such a contraption.

***Legal disclaimer: I in no way endorse this, but its how my silly butt would try it. :-"

if you can't find any good places to hook onto to carry it with 4 or more people, find a sturdy skid to put the engine on when you take it out. then you can put metal pipes, or poles or blocks of wood or whatever through so you can have a few people on each side, only problem would be the size getting it up the stairs.

Well I pulled out my 302, my 460 was hanging from the cherry picker. I stripped off the heads and whatnot, pulled the engine up onto the frame by the water pump and torque convertor. then grunted it down to the floor on my own. So if I can do that myself then you and a couple friends shouldnt have a problem. Get youself a good boxcart dolly thingy, that will help you a bunch. Might want to strap the block to the dolly frame though, LOL or I pity the guy on the bottom if it goes bad. Goodluck.

last time i moved from an apartment i moved a really big stove, and all i really remember was i was leaning down while he had to lift it up by his head. "we used 2 poles" and all i remember was visiting him in the hospital and then going to best buy to get a new stove.
