Well, I am happy to report improvement in my gas mileage.

After replacing wires, plugs, Idle Air Control, Map Sensor, 02 sensor, Fuel pressure regulator, shooting a whole bunch of B12 Chemtool in the throttle body, adding some Lucas fuel treatment, cleaning the coil terminal, replacing the battery cable ends and lubing the throttle springs on top of the intake...drum roll...

I averaged 11.6509 MPG combination of highway, offroad and stop and go city driving. It's idleing much smoother, it's not sticking at 1500 RPMs when I come to a stop, it's spinning like a top...knock on wood.

Now, if anybody has any other suggestions that might help push that MPG up a little, please let me know. I appreciate all the input you have all given. It's helped a lot.

Is 12 MPG good for a 20 year old 302 EFI with 161,000 miles on it? I have no idea what kind of mileage they got brand new.

Thanks ya'll,

Snowman74 :)>-

this is the second reprint i have done from sixlitre a fsb but they worked for me on one of mine that has the 5.0 i have the e4od though so added a shift kit and had the shift points re programed as well but now get about 12 -14 with that truck a lot better than the 7 -9 with the other one

1. Ignition; Great aftermarket plug wires, MSD coil, Autolites gapped out to .055, 100% shape cap and rotor, bump timing to 13.5 (vast improvement in mileage and throttle response).

2. Exhaust; Custom built 2 1/4" headpipes into Flowmaster Y-pipe, exiting at 3" into 3" cat. From there you can put any exhaust you want on. The improvement comes "cat forward" not cat-back as manufacturers would have you believe ( biggest acceleration improvement I've ever got from a mod and a solid 2-3mpg imrovement).

3. Chasis; stock sized tires to max inflation, brakes checked for drag, synthetic wheel bearing grease, axle fluid and transfer case ATF too.

That's the jist of it. Sure there's a K&N filter but that never added anything truly measurable, though it probably helped other mods. I also added shorty header but they too only helped acceleration, not mileage.

You cannot believe how much power and mileage is robbed by the stock Y-pipe and cats. The igintion you can do this weekend and will likely pay back in a month with gas priced where it is. Storing your 35s and going back to stock sized tires will give you back 2-4mpg tomorrow too.

That's it in a nutshell. Get the coil, re-gap the plugs, bump the timing and go for a better exhaust, it will pay off.

i agree with the timing bump. after i installed my cam i set my timing with my friends timing light. BIG MISTAKE i was getting like 8-9 mpg. and the performance sucked for what i expected. about a month ago i checked timing with a new snap-on light and i was like holy #### it was at 6 deg!!! i bumped it up to 16 deg. and i am running super with out pinging. and now i am back up to 11-12mpg. well worth the 5 min. it takes to set.
