WE are still hoping for suggestions to see what is making the loud noise when changing from F to R or R to F

in 4whl dr

But the question about the Ujoints has been raised.

Are the after market Ujoints as strong, stronger or less reliable than the stock ones ??

Are there better options when having to replace the worn/broken stock Ujoints ??

Second question is about the replacement Hubs

I have changed from Auto to Manual hubs in the past (different truck -- a 92 that has been replaced with the 95)

Really like the advantages of the Auto hubs for plowing so we can easily go in and out of 4whl drive between accounts.

I there a super strong Auto hub ??

thanks

I haven't had a problem with off the shelf u-joints from my auto supplier, but I avoid the large chain store parts like AutoZone. If you want some real high strength u-joints, http://www.broncograveyard.com , carries them.

Auto hubs have a reputation of failing just when you need them. Also, if you are already stuck, they will not engage since it takes a forward motion of 10 ft to get them engaged. You can leave the manuals locked and just pop into or out of 4x4 between accounts as long as you are not driving on dry surface. You can drive on dry surface if you are careful with turns, but it is rough on the front end.

I drive with my hubs locked on snow and slush covered roads all the time. If I feel the need for 4x4, I just pop it in.

Good luck,

:)>-

As our pal Seabronc advised.. & as wrote about da ZONE! read my note under my "pic"

From my 96's Owners Guide; "...The initial shift from two-wheel drive to 4x4 while the vehicle is moving can cause some momentary clunk and atcheting sounds. This is the front drivetrain coming up to speed and the automatic locking hubs engaging and is not a cause for concern.

I drive around with my Warn manuals locked. As Seabronc mentioned, I put it into 4hi as well when I feel it's needed.

I agree about the manual hubs. We've had a boat load of slush and snow, and it is very easy to just slip it into 4 wheel with the hubs left locked. Don't get me wrong, if I had the auto hubs, I am sure that they would be fine, but since I don't, I am impressed with the "old school" way.
