Howdy yal,

this is the first time I have posted in Bronco zone but i have used it before and found yal's knowledge to be very useful so maybe ya can help me out with the latest issue. I have a 1992 Ford Bronco with the 5.8 liter 351 it has about 170,000 miles. So when I start the truck and put it in Drive there is no lurch forward like it has locked in gear, and when I step on the gas the truck barely moves forward real sluggish like. However if I shift the trans down to second or first gear and step on the gas it has all the power it should. any thoughts

Thanks for the help.

yo 1992broncoford,

WELCOME!

I assume it is the E4OD

Basic Checks; such as fluid level; when at norm op temp; after running thru all gears & reverse, and fluid condition; no burnt toast aroma, whitish (water) deposits on dip stick.

Before any diagnostic testing is done on a vehicle some preliminary checks must be performed, as outlined below. Be sure to write down your findings, especially any DTCs found, for future reference.

Check for add-on items (phones, computers, CB radio etc).

Verify that the shift linkage is properly adjusted in OVERDRIVE. Adjustment in 92-96

Visually inspect wiring harness and connectors:Verify that Transmission Range (TR) sensor is properly adjusted in NEUTRAL. Located on driver's side of transmission

same for Solenoid Body Connector on passenger side - "...Completely seat solenoid body connector into solenoid body assembly receptacle by pushing on the top of the connector. An audible click indicates full contact. Verify connection by pulling on harness..."

Verify customer concern; upshift, downshift, coasting, engagement, noise vibration.

Vehicle must be at a normal operating temperature.

Perform vehicle On-Board Diagnostics. This is the Self Test by BroncoJoe

Record all DTCs.

Service all nontransmission DTCs

Is the OD LED flashing? Ford calls it the Transmission Control Indicator Light (TCIL) (Lockout) Switch

Try a Self Test for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s by my pal, BroncoJoe19

The engine temperature must be greater than 50° F for the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and greater than 180° F for the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.

Run it around to heat the engine up and shift thru all gears incl Reverse. Then turn off all accessories/lights, etc.

Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic) or in Neutral for a Manual & release clutch.

Do Key On Engine Off (KOEO) portion first.

Look Codes up in my broncolinks.com site using the new Search function.

And Post em here according to:

KOEO

&

KOER

Hopefully it is a sensor or the MLPS;

Baumann says advises without Codes;

"...You will want to make sure that your truck isn't actually skipping second gear and going right to third. When the intermediate clutch fails on an E4OD it causes it to stay in first gear until third gear is commanded and then it will shift from first to third. Going directly from first to 3rd will cause a harsh shift. Pay close attention to the number of shifts to make sure this is not happening.

If second gear is begining to wear or glaze it could also cause a harsh shift. These conditions will cause slippage at the start of the shift with a hard apply at the end. This type of shift is often reffered to as a slide-bump shift.

Also you could have a problem in your transmission's accumulator body. A problem with the 1-2 accumulator could cause a harsh or delayed 1-2 shiift. A problem with the line modulator valve could also cause this, but it would usually effect more than one gear..."
