Hey, my spare tire carrier is getting pretty rusty looking. So i want to take it off, sandblast and herculine it. I attempted to take it off a couple of springs ago but broke one bolt for the mount to the body.

So anyone else break these bolts? If i break em all, how would it be to put new bolts in there? Im gonna take off the inside panel and see if i can see anything in there. Any ideas?

I dont think you will be able to see anything from the inside panel, the wall is double layered. You might be able to get in there through the taillight hole, allowing you to spray wd40 or something up there

tape off the truck and sand and paint it while on the truck, seems like it would be the safest bet

I just got rid of mine and had a similar experience. You should be able to remove the tail light assembly with 4 screws and gain access to the back side of the bolts. Try lots of PB from the inside and maybe you can avoid breaking the others. You may even be able to get a pair of needlenose onto the broken bolt from the inside and thread it through to the inside since the head is snapped off.

Just spray some WD-40 on the front side and use a 1/2 inch Breaker bar as it will give you a tremendos torque gain. Most of the time a bolt breaks it is because not enough torque is applied and a twisting force is applied to the bolt head and shaft and SNAP!

I broke my spare tire carrier bolts too. I just grinded down what was left over from the old bolts and then puttied over them. Or you could drill a hole in the center of the bolt and use an easy-out on it.
