HEy guys,

I got a 93 a couple of weeks ago, and the tailgate won't open. The window won't roll down either.

I checked the fuse's and they are fine.

I removed the acces pannel and tried to manually pull the rods to un-latch the gate, that is when the window stoped working from the key and dash swithc.

I was thinking maby I activated the swithc that sences when the gate is open.

so far this has been the only pita :((

Thanks,

Chris

You can try pushing in on the tailgate from the outside while working the key switch or someone works the dash switch. There is a safety feature on the driver's side that won't let the window down if the gate is open or not fully closed. Just don't push so hard you dent the gate. If you hear the motor buzzing or spinning but the window won't go down, the motor's gear is stripped. In that case, you might be able to pull down on the glass from inside the access panel while spinning the motor. You can also hook 2 jumper wires to the motor and check if it turns. You may have to reverse the jumper leads to make it go down instead of up. Be careful where you put your hands inside the tailgate, so you don't get a finger pinched in the regulator assembly. It may help to **** the side tracks with WD-40, too.

I guess today I will try to hood up a jumper to the moter and try to get it down.

Does the window have to be all the way down to open the tailgate?

Any ideas where to find the tailgate latch release mechanism other than broncograveyard.com

Thanks,

Chris

Yes, the window has to be all the way down. I found this out myself. There is a switch inside that realizes when the window is down and allows the door to open.

any one have some advice on removing the window motor. It only goes down a few inches should I assume that it is the gear inside the motor?

I think I will replace the window stripping while I am at it since it leaks.

Anything else I should do while I am in there?

Also still looking for the latch release assembly.......... :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Thanks For the help so far everyone :excl: :excl:

There should just be three bolts holding the motor on. If you pull those three bolts there's no reason it shouldn't release. You may need to lower the window a little first using the jumper so you can get your hand up there to work back and forth to relieve the pressure on the gear while you pull the motor out. Once you get it loose you might want to lower the glass all the way by hand so you can lower the tailgate before you try replacing the gear in it. That way you can work on the motor easily without having to cut the wires.

If you're just going to pull the motor then just hit every hinge and the regulators with some good grease. Silicone grease works wonders. Check your wires and wrap any exposed parts. Replace any bad wires. Give your runners a good look at too. That felt in there can get ripped or folded and make your motor work much harder than it should.

Call around some junkyards for prices on the parts you need. You can get a much better price than that if you look around. I'm sure you'll find at least a couple of working tailgates out there that are dented enough for the yard to let you canabalize it.

Are you sure the motor is bad? I also got a '93 a couple of weeks ago and had the same problem. chr_edw is correct, the window does have to be all the way down for the tailgate to work. If the tailgate is down the window will not work. There is a switch on the inside of window runner on the drivers side in the tailgate. That switch on my Bronco went bad. As soon as I bypassed it and lubed up all the moving parts and runners, the window worked fine. When the window started working the tailgate then started working. :D/

One big warning. Make sure the spring bar in the tailgate (makes the tailgate easier to lift) is in good shape inside the tailgate. Like others, mine broke after I got everything working and shattered the back glass  . It took 1 and a half hours to get up all the glass. Then I had to buy a whole new back glass.

chr edw, if the motor moves the window a little and then stops, the glass might be binding in the side tracks. Use a generous amount of WD-40 on the sides and even the regulator assembly (spray the heck out of everything) and work the glass up and down. IF you or a friend can push downward on the glass while doing this, you should be able to get the glass down all the way to the bottom. Even if the motor's gear is stripped, it helps to make it turn while pushing down on the glass. Once the tailgate is opened, you can "fool" the safety switch by closing the latches on the tailgate and rolling the glass back up enough to get to the motor. Support the glass with a stand. LMC Truck has a price of $45 for the latch assly, or get one for $10 from a junkyard like stated.

Just an update.

You guys saved some seriour $$$ I lubed up all the moving parts and the window goes up and down great !!!!

I did finally get the tailgate down, but it is still very hard to get open. The latch bars are bent out of shape a little, so I guess I will replace them since they are not that expensive.
