There are a couple of possibilities: 1. Bad switch 2. The 12V lead, (black with white stripe). has an intermittent bad connection,

Diagram attached:

Good luck,

ah yes. this was my first inquiry as i am only a couple of weeks new to the bronco world. my key would turn sometimes and at others it wouldn't. There are apparently several things that could happen with rear window. my dad is a general contractor, and when a lock gets stuck he would put graphite in it to lubricate it. i thought why not. I put graphite in it(available at any hardware store) and worked it in and out a little. The key has never given me problems again. the switch on the dash however is a different beast. I have referred to seabronco's diagram, i saved it to my desktop actually, but I couldn't find a problem. The inside of the switch looks interesting though.

Generally the key on the tailgate is different from the key for the ignition, and the dash switch is on a different circuit then the tailgate switch. The tailgate switch has an always on 12V lead, as Seabronc pointed out, whereas the dash switch is only operational when the ignition is in the on position. Most of the time I have found that if the dash switch works, but the tailgate switch doesn't, then the fault is going to be with that 12V lead so I would definitly focus my search for the problem around that.

If the key switch is original, it should be the same as the door lock.

Good luck,

Should be the same key if it is the original, but if it has been changed it will be different from the door key. Mine use to have two different keys. I looked round in a junk yard to find a Bronco with 1. keys in it and 2. one that had a door key that operated the rear window switch, (not the easiest thing to find in a junk yard since keys tend to disappear). You could also get a matching set from a dealer or have a lock smith key the tumbler to the door key.

Good luck,

:)>-

My 95 has one key for the door locks and ignition and then a seperate key for the tailgate. Of course that was before I shaved off all of the exterior locks.

I had the same problem. I removed the Driver's side taillight & found a broken wire. I fixed that and the keyswitch worked again. That may be your problem too.

The diagram that was sent you shows that the ONLY way a complete circuit is made is through the dash switch. It supplies the path to ground. The biggest problem with the tailgate window motor is the lousy grounds in Broncos. There is a fix for this problem (www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7937) for the rewiring digram. It involves adding a couple of relays and running some wire.

Have fun,

Rocky

I just bought a 1990 Bronco and I love it. It just needs some fixin' up. My first problem is that the dash switch to let down the back window does not work but the key switch works fine. Could that be a bad fuse, although the power windows and door locks still work?

The contacts inside the switch are bad. I just dealt with the same thing. If you take the switch apart you can depress the contacts inside (USE A NON METAL OBJECT, TRUST ME). The mechanism inside is like a lever. Anyhow, my advice is to just admit defeat, and shell out the 40 bucks for a new switch if it's that important. I live in southern california where the weather is almost ALWAYS a windows down day. For me it was important. For someone in MT it might not be so important especially during the winter. You can find a switch at www.broncograveyard.com or call the dealer. either way it's about $35. The junk yard might have one, I called around to the few close ones and no luck. Good luck with the search and don't forget to remove the trim pieces that reveal the screws to remove the dash insert.

Yes, they all should operate from the both the key and the dash switch.
