Need some help.

Spliced in a jumper wire for the power to the tailgate key switch a couple days ago. Everything worked fine (dash switch and key switch) for a couple of days. Went out today and the window started to go down then stopped. Will not work from either switch. Now the t/g window is stuck up. All fuses are good.I still have power to both switches.

  1. How do I get it down
  2. What would cause it? A short in the line?

If you still have power and ground going into the tailgate, then yes you have to open it up to do more troubleshooting.

You have to crawl back there and take the cover panel off it. From there you can jumper the motor directly to get the window down and open the tailgate. Makes it a little easier to follow the voltage from the key switch, through the latch switch and out to the motor.

I have been able to take a metal yard stick, and go down the inside of the window, and depress the tailgate lock, and open it as long as the windows is low enough. On a 79, the lock is just off of center.

Motor was failing.

Was able to replace it but, man that is not an easy task. Especially, in the Florida heat.

electrical is not my strong point. it may be the motor has gone bad or the window is off track. if you have an alarm on your truck (I have a viper alarm system). I was informed the tailgate window can be linked to my alarm fob since my key wont open/close the window. I have not done this yet since it still works from the dash but eventually. not sure if this will help.

It is not too difficult, if you can learn on the fly and think through it.

I did some research before doing it and it worked out.

Turns out the motor was failing. New motor and no problems.

yeah, open panel in tail gait. Easier than a modern door I bet. If a lill older I'd say "grounds" &/or clean track. Ck for continuity w/test light. This can solve 80% of my ele problems.

YJ351LC,
Now you're familiar with the innards of that tailgate window assembly. It be a great opportunity to call Jeff's Bronco Graveyard (JBG) for a bushing kit---they're about $15. A worn bushing or two will first show up as a slow window that occasionally stops / starts. Then it just quits. No place to be during Aug--Sept. FL monsoons. Been there, done that. BTW, JBG doesn't include the hardware, ya figure?

Click in the back and take the service panel of the tail gait and then you need to look at your mechanism real close becouse you can get it down but just remember one thing if your motor went out and you have electric windows change all three.
