i have an 82. it has a 351 but can't find engine numbers so don't really know which kind could use some help there, the vin doesn't match the engine size. guy i bought is from say it is a 351 M engine, that was back in 2000. it ran great up untill last year. anyways when i start to go about 50 to 55. the engine starts to blow oil out os dipstick tube and on the the headers there for smoking me and everyone out behind me. i feel like frickin batman in a smoke screen. i think it is a overpressure some where but i just don't want to have to tear the engine apart. all spark plugs look a solid perfect brown and there is no smoke out of the exhaust pipe. if anyone could help me out. that wouls be great. till then bust big, ride fast and spread the love.

You most likely have a restriction in the cranke case ventilation path. The first and easiest check if the PCV valve and the Pipe from it to the intake manafold. If the valve is OK and the tube is clear and unrestricted, remove the valve covers and make sure that the oil return holes are clear and free of sludge.

The path for Positive Crankecase Ventilation is in from aircleaner down thru the driver side oil return hole (left hand drive vehicles), thru the oil pan back up thru the passenger side oil return, thru the PCV valve and into the intake manafold (usually under the carb).

Another possibility is you have too much fluid in the pan. I said fluid not just oil. If the fuel pump diaphram is leaking you might have a fuel oil mixture in there. I have personally experienced this. Immagine the surprise when I drained the oil and came up with about 10 quarts of fluid  . Then upon feeling of it, it seemed awfully thin  , then the odor of gas  Talk about a truck bomb :(( .

Good luck,

:)>-

well i had checked the pcv valve and all is clear. and it is brand new valve and it is working. today i flushed engine with cleaner to see if it would clean some sluge out. but when i bought the bronco the guy said it was a new shrot block. so after that flush i drianed oil and got oil and cleaner. not really aany gunk. i plan to do a comp. test (dry and wet). to see if it could be rings and to get a better info. i also took the old valve covers of and put these Crome ones on that i had bought. and the old ones they are messed up. the passages looked clear to me and everything else looked good too. well see what any buddy says and thanks for the replies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A couple of things come to mind, but can you tell us a little more first?

It got a new engine in 2000 and it ran great up til last year - was that for you, or his words before you bought it. (how lng have YOU actually owned it and did the problem exist when you bought it or a while after you bought it?)

What is the oil pressure normally? and does it go up or down when this happens?

When it happens, how much oil is actually lost? Just a few drops or a pretty forceful stream?

How many miles are on this new engine?

Any valve train noise, sudden loss of power during the problem, back firing or anything else odd during the problem?

Also, you mentioned changing the valve covers to some chromes.

Did the problem exist before then or did it develop shortly afterwards?

And last, are you absolutely positively certain the oil is coming from the oil tube pipe, instead of the valve covers oil fill hole or the valve cover gasket or possibly a bad deck surface on the head (valve cover side) or the beginnings of a cracked head, or possibly spraying up from an aftermarket oil sending tube?

My oil guage sending tube inlet is literally pointing at my headers, if it bursts or leaks under pressure, the headers would be the oils target :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> and with the inlet being on the same side as my dipstick, it would get all over it also and make for a nice time of figuring it all out.

I am kinda leaning towards a simple leak like that, especially since you stated there was no smoke from the exhaust and didn't mention oil being in the air filter and housing.

Seems like a lot of questions, but sometimes it takes questions to help figure stuff out, especially when we aren't there to see for ourselves :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

definately check the compression first but this might not tell you anything.

I had oil come out my dip stick tube. The first quick fix was to put ventilated oil caps on both valve covers. This is only a temperary fix. Then I pulled the intake manifold thinking I need to look at the heads, pistons and rings. What I found was the engine to manifold gasket was missing in the center on one passenger side. This area missing the gasket is were exhaust goes thru the intake manifold to keep heat under the carb. So the exhaust was entering the motor adding too much positive crank case pressure. The easiest spot to releave the pressure was the oil dip stick tube. This was a lucky quick fix, hope its a quick fix for you!

Keep smoken us out!

ok i will try and answer all the qustions to the best of my knowldge...

the guy i bought the truch from was selling it for his brother. the guy said that he had put a short block in it and i beleive that he said that he had about a lillte of 10000 on the moter and i have put about 7 to 10 on it my self..

now the i'm in the navy so when i got back home i on leave to pick my truck up (in boise)and drove it back (to san diego). but before i took in to san dog i took it to a shop and had them replace the gaskets from the intake on up. the truck then had the problem after about six months after i moved to san dog. that was about november of 2002. i bought the truck on jan.2000.

i just have a oil dumby light so don't know what the pressure is.

there is drops coming out of the dipstick tube. i found out cause when i noticed the problem i opened the hood and reved the engine up and oil (just a little bit) misted my shirt. but only at high revs and when the truck is about going 50-60mph.

there is no noise coming from engine or tranny or shit any where. no power loss and nothing odd.

i had just the other day changed the valve covers and the other ones where dented a little. and yes the problem exited since november of 2002

hope i answered the questioned to your liking and if you have any more please ask away. thanks for your help man.

So only about 20,000 miles on the engine...

It could be the rings, especially if improperly seated and very cheap rings, but no idea since it was done before you got it..

Another thing that comes to mind... When you are running at speed and the problem occurs, does the truck seem to be getting weak or having to work harder to maintain speed?

What I am getting at is something that can cause undue block pressure and many do not realize that when a new engine is installed, or rebuilt, that it is a good idea to also install a new catalytic convertor, as one with some age and use to it can fail easily and break apart, causing restricted exhaust flow, which in turn pressurizes the block a lot more than normal, even with perfect rings and valve tolerences.

Being an 82, it should have a cat, so if everything else (cylinder pressure bleed down test and the other ideas here) isn't the main cause, then odds are, its something to do with your exhaust back pressure.

And since you're a nav type, what's your job?

I'm a former gunners mate on the big stick, USS Iowa BB61, decomm'ed in 1990.

well when i'm running it she doesn't seem to bog or run weaker. i could even pull away from other people. the engine runs strong and start up are fine. now the cat sounds like an idea but i think that the exhaust is an after-market one. and i' don't think that there is a cat but i will check into that. this week-end i'm going to compression test the cylinders. i will get back to you on that. tell me what you think

but besides that. i maintian ejection seats and work bleed air and pressurization on the world famous S-3 viking.(@ VS-33) lol. but that is what i do. i've been on three west packs and i'm going on a world cruise in january. sux cause my wife just had our daughter and i would like to spend time with her but the navy tells me i have to go and well i will have to go.

i would really look at gaskets if the compression checks are good. i'f you said the problem started about 6 months after you had them they may have missed a gasket or used really cheap ones. (happen to the wife's car)
