Please help, my baby is a 77 with a 302, everything original. The problem is that she dying on me while driving and also just at an idol. I think it is an ignition problem but not sure. What should I do to start with to find the problem? Any suggestions would help. What is irritating is that she runs great and then just quits with an easy restart.

Start with, ...how old is the fuel pump & filter..? Is the pump leaking fr. the weep hole. There may be more than one filter...including the one on/in the carb. The pick-up tube in the tank can get clogged or an obstruction in the fule line.

The points/condenser can cause this. Also a faulty coil.

Wireing connections clean & tight...?

Don't be stingy with pert. info. ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I've checked the fuel system and all seems well. I originally thought it was either sucking for air and dying or not getting enough fuel but not in this case. I did recently have a stereo and speakers installed. This all began before I had them installed though. Sometimes it does not want to start when in park, I have to put her in nuetral to start her. I will check the wiring again and see if it is shorting out. But would a short on the ignition cause her to die like that?

"would a short on the ignition cause her to die like that? "

I would think so.. a "short" would be an exposed wire/insulation rubbing on ground. I would think, more likely, it's a bad connection. Try a jumper from + battery to + on coil ....see if it will stay runn'n.

If so, that's the prob. (You'll have to remove jumper to shut it off.)

I think that I found part of the problem. When they mounted the stereo, the idiot drilled into the dash wiring and was shorting a bunch of wires. I made need to replace the entire under dash wiring system. I have the instalation company repairing their mistake now. I am going to have them check the connections on the ignition also since they have to replace some of the wires anyway. What I may do is talk to them about if I buy the harness will they do the labor sort of thing. Any way thanks for your help and I may set the wire up on a toggle like you suggested.

After talking with the guy thats what we decided to do. Its quick and easy and works just as good. We replaced the damaged portions of the wire and cleaned it all up real good. She's working real good now. Thanks.

THANK YOU ...! for the fix report..... :)>-

One post/thread may help 10+ other folks with the same problem...... So many just go away, thinking only of themselves, & no-one knows if the suggestions actually helped/worked. Good job... B)
