Ever since i ot my 83 full size i knew it was gutless. But untill today i never knew exactly how bad untill i took it out in the snow to play and couldnt get enough jam to turn the tires in 4x4. What should be the first things i should do to get my baby back up to par?

First off, what size tires are you running? Lower gears are the way to go when running large tires. Pushing through snow isn't easy and takes torque just like deep mud. You want to be able to spin those tires when needed. Plus in low range/low gears will help crawl slowly over large obsticals with more control. Less breakage and damage to the vehicle. This is a good time to add lockers if you plan on doin some wheelin. This way you don't have to re-setup the gears when you want to add a locker. If you do lots of street driving get a selectable locker. Posi's don't work all that well with large tires. If all else fails you can always weld up the spider gears but this makes it like a spool and your tires will wear fast on pavement. good tires will help too. Stay away from thornbirds, wildcats & wildcountry cheap tires.

Tires Ratio Needed

33's stock to 4:10

35's 4:10 to 4:56

36's 4:56 to 4:88

38's 4:88 to 5:89

40+ 5:89 to 6:12+

Tire choice is definitely important. Start with the basics, though. Does the 4WD system work? If it does, and you still feel underpowered, make sure you have the right gear ratio for the tire size you're running like stated. Any problems with the motor can rob power (jam), so you may need a tune-up, adjust timing and/or a new fuel filter. Check for any vacuum leaks, too. Mostly regular maintenance stuff first, then start looking for a problem if it persists.
