There is a snap ring hidden in the groove I marked. It is way down in there.

I usually take some small straight blade ***** drivers to find the end and get the end pried out, then get behind it with an o-ring pic and pull it.

Thanks, that's what it took. It was a tough job, not much online help on this particular project. We were replacing seals and upper and lower ball joints. Getting the rotors off after this step required a 2 1/2" socket which we found at O'Riley's but we had to grind the edges to get it to fit onto the nut we had to remove. A four hour job took eight but it's done and all is working well.
