I had to to replace the pickup in my distributor and it seems if you punch it, it does take off but at one point and time I could squeal the tires. I guess that is not really a big deal but I just want to make sure the timing is right. I definitely got it set at 10 degrees BTC and I did pull the little thing that I think you call the spout to set the timing. I just want to make sure everything is right or if I need to do something else to make it right. It starts right up but it seems like it may have a little rough idle.

The second thing is there a certain symptom when the diverter valve goes out?

I would appreciate any help to fix this quickly because the heat outside is frying my brain.

I don't see any identification of what year truck an engine is involved.  Apparently you have an EFI engine since you mentioned the SPOUT connector.  Your procedure was correct.  When the SPOUT connector is re-installed the computer takes over the job of timing and determines exactly when to fire the plugs similar to the way the carbed engines timing was controlled by mechanical means.  It may be that now that you have a new component in there that the computer needs a little bit of time adjust to it.  It also could be that the basic timing was set a few degree higher before.  Did you take note of what it was at before you set it to 10 BTDC?

By diverter valve are you talking about the air injection system?

Take time to setup your signature with the truck's vitals.

Oh, it's a 5.8, I did but I haven't squealed the tires in a long time because it is a waste of rubber but I wanted to see because it needed the distributor rebuilt if that changed anything.

MSD 8451 distributor

Edelbrock Performer heads

Edelbrock  Performer Intake manifold

BBK  61mm Throttle body

The rest of the engine is stock.

When I mentioned diverter valve, it is behind the engine and is connected to a metal tube and is connected at the back of the heads,it might be the air injection system

yo Rog,

Possible Codes for diverter/secondary air system issues;

312Secondary Air Injection (AIR) misdirected during KOER313Secondary Air Injection (AIR) not bypassed during KOER

Possible causes: Visually inspect vacuum lines for disconnects in the AIR system. Visually inspect for proper vacuum line routing. Refer to VECI decal. Visually inspect Air Pump for broken or loose Air Pump Belt

Overview & Diagram; "...Secondary Air Injection system consists of a belt-driven Air Pump, single or dual AIR Diverter (AIRD) valve(s), an AIR Bypass (AIRB) valve, and AIR Bypass solenoids, air silencer/filter, Powertrain Control Module and connecting wires and vacuum hoses. The Belt-Driven Secondary Air Injection system provides either upstream/bypass air or upstream/downstream/bypass air. The number of these system configurations vary significantly with AIR Bypass (AIRB) and AIR Diverter (AIRD) valve combinations (Figure 179). 2. The PCM provides one or more signals that enable one or more AIR Bypass solenoids. 3. The AIR Bypass solenoids control one or more AIR Bypass valves and/or AIR Bypass Diverter Valves in order to route secondary air depending upon the specific configuration. 4. The belt-driven Air Pump is operational any time the engine is running..." read more
