Hate to ask really, really dumb question. I just purchased a 1996 Bronco, if the rear window motor goes out, how is one to open the tailgate?

from what i remember on my 94- after you get the access panel off on the back of the tailgate-try and pull the motor off, remember to support the window . The motor is held on by 3 bolts- I think they're 8mm- Good Luck

The access panel is under the carpet on the inside of the tailgate. Remove the plastice rivet things that hold the carpet on and you will see that it is held on by a few screws.

Also, if you are worried about cosmetics, be gentle when removing the rivets, they are very easy to destroy. You can find suitable replacements at Autozone or Advance auto but they only come in black or white. I used model paint (like for plastic cars and airplanes) to color the ones I had to replace.

Goodluck, removing the motor is hard enough when the tailgate is open, nevermind when its closed. I found the best way is to lift the top off the window and open the tailgate with the window up. The window will flop when the tailgate is let down but just have someone ready. There is a ton of room for error here, you need a few friends on this one.

The hardest thing is climbing back there for me. Then you remove the panel and there is a rod going down from the latch you pull it down and that signals the glass is down and then you can pull the handle and open the gate. But you will have to lift the top up to get the glass to clear the rubber seal. Be careful and have someone to help is good to support the glass.

I think that the best way to do it is to try to unbolt the window from the arms of the mechanism with the front panel off , have a piece of wood or whatever you can find that will hold the window in place after the bolts are out and you have put down the tools, let the glass down to the bottom gently, the latch should be on the inside from the glass and you should beable to find a way to open it now, when you get the tailgate down carefully slide the window out and set it on a blanket on a workbench or somewhere where it wont be broken then that should give you lost of room to work without breaking anything
