'74, 302, J-shifter (duh), PTO winch

Bought it from an old man who was the original owner. Well kept but not babied. Everything worked fine and all of a sudden one day i got in it and there was a big strain when I started to go. Both foward and reverse. 4 low doesn't drag but both 2h and 4h do. Not the brakes. Brakes are good. Maybe t-case. Hope it's not the rear end. Any suggestions?

Sure,...

Jack it up on stands & start spinning things....tranie in neutral, T-case in various positions, hubs--in & out, etc.

Is the winch disengaged..?

Auto trans or 3 speed..?

sorry, I forgot. It's a 3 speed on the column. I thought about the winch being engaged but it still drags when the winch is disengaged. I jacked up the rearend and the back wheels didn't spin freely when in neutral. They spun, but I had to push pretty hard. Front tires spun like normal. This is why I'm affraid it is something in the rear end or maybe the t-case. Thanks for the help.
