Hey guys what year was the 8.8 used in broncos? My rear end is shot. I spun the carrier bearings and the differential is *****. Ring and pinion is nonexistant lol. I really messed it up. I am going to a salvage yard to get a whole axle assembly. I also need to know if there was any differences in the years that i need to worry about. Mind you this is just a temporary fix. I am eventually putting Dana 60s under it. If i could get some advise about this i would appreciate greatly.

Ok i found an 8.8 with a H9 axle code on an 82 or 85(can't remember) bronco. It is a limited slip with 3.55 gears which is the same as what i have. It doesnt have rear anti-lock brakes. it doesnt even have the place for the sensor. It is the only one that i could find that was in one piece. Will it work? is it possible to put the sensor and ring in the older 8.8?

do u have the E40D because if u do then u need the abs and can't use the old rear end unless u want no speedo. i have the same problem in my 95 because i want to install a 9 inch :-B and can't because of that speed sensor

if ur in a jam use the new/old rear end for now with out the sensor till u can find a 8.8 with one.

don't know if u'll find a dana 60 with a speed sensor in it or not.

if u can pleast post where

good luck :)>-

I'm pretty sure that the actuall vehicle speed sensor is in the tranny. The sensor in the rear is for the ABS. There are also speed sensor rings in the front end, and i know that they don't control the speedometor

Ok scratch all that I found a rearend for my truck, that is the same. The only thing I am going to do is put a limited slip differential in. If i remove the Differential am I going to have to reshim the ring gear? And how do you set the carrier bearing preload?

that sensor in the rearend housing controls BOTH the RABS and the speedo, along with the tranny if you have the E40D. that axle you found in the 82 was a 9" not an 8.8. thats why there was no place for the sensor. you should not be shimming the ring gear, thats incorrect. the easiest thing for YOU to do is to take that axle and the limited grip you want to a drivline shop and have them set that bad boy up for you. that way you know it was done right, and if it wasnt, they WILL fix it for free (you can make them do it)

ok so you're saying there are no shims for the ringgear? I am going to do it myself, so if you havent pls don't tell me to take it to a pro i'd rather someone else tell me that knows how. The pro knowing how to do it is not what i want. I want to learn myself. But thanks anyway

i meant no disrespect in telling you to take your rig to a pro. what i was getting at was trying your hand at installing rear end gears on what i assume to be a DD is not a wise (in my opinion) choice. BUT, with that said, on the 8.8 the shims for the carrier go on the outside of the carrier bearings, and you also have to shim the pinion to get the proper pattern on both the front and backside of ring gear teeth. make sure you have the proper backlash set too. depending on the quality of your bearings in use right now, it might not hurt to buy a master install kit with your gears and LS

gungho,

I am all for people learning how to fix their own rigs, but I have to side with ocala on this one...

As a first time diff builder, you will NEED;

a micrometer

a dial indicator

an inch pound ROTATIONAL torque meter

a good quality torque wrench

a hydraulic press

a bearing splice

a very clean workplace

A SERVICE MANUAL.

gear marking compound....

You may find that you will need lots of patience as well, sometimes setting up used gears on a different (new or used) carrier than was in the differential can be a real pain in the ****!!

If you have ALL of the above as well as the normal assortment of hand tools, than go for it, if not the cost in tools alone may be worth the time to take it to a qualified repair shop familiar with the Ford 8.8.

Otherwise you may find one of two things....

either you have gotten in over your head, and end up having the truck towed to above mentioned repair shop. (seen it MANY times)

OR that you have just installed a set of gears and carrier, and they end up grenading, and you have to start the whole process all over again.

(seen this scenario even more than the first!!)

That is my opinion, take it or leave it, and yes I am qualified to, and have rebuilt several 8.8" diffs.
