Ok so I took the truck to get inspected(NY) and it failed. The guy is a friend of the family but he said it needs rear brakes, tires, wipers which I kind of figured, was hoping he would look the other way for me, but he also told me that the drivers side axle seal is blown. So I was wondering if theres any special tricks to doing it, I have the chiltons and hayes manuals but I was just wondering if theres any info you expierenced bronco guys have. Also he told me the EGR valve needs to be replaced but that shouldnt be to difficult I dont think. The rear should be an 8.8 right stock on a 1989 XLT?

Truck:'89 Bronco XLT,351,auto

Thanks to anyone who can help

I do not know if the 1989 axle is like my 1978 axle. But if it is ---look at the steel plate that holds the axle in ----as you pull it out. Mine (and yours may be the same-am not positive) but their is a DIMPLE --ON THE TOP. -If you put it back in and the DIMPLE is i=on the bottom-----it will leak and you will have to re-do it--so make sure you look at the steel plate as you take it out and make sure you get it back in right

Good luck

Ok so I went to take out the rear axle bearing and seal from my 1989 XLT because it was leaking. I took everything out the axle and all and the bearing is the tapered kind but I am real confused now because it doesnt match up with either book I have picture wise and I cant find a replacement because I have no idea which bearing and seal to get when I ask for one at the auto parts store they have the wrong one. Also inside the rear end looked different than the book I have too, not much but there was a strange clip in there that looks like it holds the spider gears in place somewhat. it almost looks like an "S", any help would be greatly appreciated.

I posted a link to Miesk5's broncolinks page with info on the Ford 8.8" axle in this thread:

http://broncozone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17091

Not sure if you're replacing the seal/ bearings at the end of the axle tube, or the ones on the carrier/ chunk, but there's one from Brahma502 at supermotors.net with pics and tech on how to replace the end seals/ bearings. If your axle still has the metal ID tag, get all the numbers off of it to help with ordering parts. The BOM (Bill of Material) numbers are used for that purpose. You can rent a slide hammer at the parts store, too. It will cost you about $210, but that will be refunded when you return the tool. JSM84

Your trouble about trying to find a replacement part . Reminded me of the time I was trying to find a bearing for my 79 Caprice. I looked evetwhere and was talking to a friend. He said he would try and asked for the old bearing and I told him to take the car and I,d let him fix it since I couldn,t miss work. He took the bearing out -went to the parts store and it WAS NOT LISTED UNDER CHEVROLET. They took the part number and found it under CADILAC. They laughed because my buddy told the --I had told him the car ROAD LIKE A CADILAC.--and it was a TIMKEN BEARING---AND THEY HAVE A CROSS REFERENCE NUBERS-WHERE YOU CAN GET A REPLACEMENT-GOOD LUCK
