am thinking about increasing my spark plug gap on my 289. what would that do with an unburnt fuel smell?

Hey hughd,

Welcome.

I assume that you're working on a 67 with carbed  289 .........Best thing is to adjust the carb for the correct mixture.  It's difficult to answer about the plug gap, as we don't know if you are running stock 67 points ignition, or something upgraded that could handle bigger gaps.   It isn't a good idea to try something to mask a problem.

BTW if you  go to settings and fill in your signature with the info on your truck it will help get better advice.

Couldn't agree more with Ron.

Bad carb/mixture or faulty timing can stink up your garage, clothes, nose-hairs, etc. to the point

where only a shower will cure you..!

And for sure, the info. pages filled in will get you valid help.

Larger gap may even make it worse.

Mallory recommends a certain coil., a ballast resistor, & an active power filter.

(do you know if you have those..?) (Is this dizzy in good shape..?)

This being an electronic/pointless ignition, it's likely the plug gap should be wider.

They come in mechanical & vacuum advance. Yours is...??

However, the ignition isn't much help if the timing chain is shot., or the timing is

just way off.

(More info = better answers... :D/  )

You see the info to the left & below my post...?  It all helps.

I would suggest you contact Mallory for your set-up info & plug gap.

Summit Racing can help also, as they sell Mallory.

Let us know what you find..., It could help others.

hughd,

Remember the jets are only part of the fuel circuit The mixture screws and off idle circuit contribute to the total fuel delivery.  If  the timing is off the vacuum can be low and contribute to excess fuel flow

Bully gave good tips and advice, and remember to let all know what the results are.

Good Luck

The filter prevents power spikes as I've heard it.

Test timing chain ; "KEY OFF"  move crank by hand back-n-forth ..., note slop by watching the rotor.

Should be pretty much in sinc.

Clean rig.., assume you just got it....
