Okay, okay, before anyone goes right after me on being a herb, it was dark, the sprinklers were spraying me and the truck down, and it was 2am.

Pre:

Previous owner ripped remote start/radio out because he said there was some parasitic draw that was killing battery.

Purchased truck, began mods (below). Didn't have a problem with battery until one day truck wouldn't start but had plenty of voltage. Looked online (broncozone!) and found the old bang the starter trick. That worked for a little, until it rained and I didn't want to get wet. Had some mechanic replace starter (too busy to do it myself) probably a cheap one. No problems until recently.

Installed 5.0 mustang shorty headers, had exhaust shop weld me up 2.25" pipes. A week later, starter acting up again, had to start banging on the new starter. Then went to visit the new hotty (pictures upon request!) and woke up in the morning with a dead truck. No voltage whatsoever. Got a jump from AAA and realized that the voltage gauge was reading 8 volts and dropping fast. Made it to work, but fuel pump was choking (from no voltage) radio wouldn't work, then the all gauges failed (no tach, odometer, speedo) but voltage, oil pressure, temp, and fuel still worked. Transmission shifting rough, but no blinking O/D light. Brought an extra marine battery with me for end of night. Came out from work, installed new battery BACKWARDS! (only for about 10 seconds) Flipped it, but no start.

THIS MORNING:

Diagnosed the alternator, bought a stock rebuilt one from local parts store (127$ with core), installed it and new exide battery for truck. NO START. Installed jumper cables and banged the starter, NO START. Finally jumped the solenoid with a good pair of vice grips and she fired right up.

PROBLEMS:

On the way home i noticed the speedo was not working, nor the odometr (blank). Tach and everything else was working.

Transmission was shifting rough, and then I noticed the light blinking, second gear only, (limp home mode?).

Where do I start? Fuses, relays, anything on the tranny to look for? Anyone ever have a problem like this?

This is my only ride, so I need it!

1995 XLT (8/94 build date)

5.0 EFI , stock tires and drivetrain, stock intake, no mods to block or cam.

Dual exhaust, headers (shorty mustang), MSD coil, Ford 9mm wires, 13 degrees timing, new alternator(95amp stock rebuild), EGR delete (haven't purchased the sensor so check engine light is on.) O2 sensor on passenger side exhaust only.

UPDATE!

Took a lunch break and checked all the fuses. Found the number 11 20amp **** fuse, blown. I guess it controls the speedo/odometer. Apparently the tranny uses this to help shift. Replaced the fuse and had no problems driving home, speedo came back with odometer, no shift troubles. Also hit the parts store for a new solenoid.

Still wondering why the new starter is on the fritz. COuld it be the added heat from the headers? The ****** on passenger side is right next to the starter. Anyone have any suggestions? SHould I wrap the starter? I guess I need a new starter AGAIN.

I hop this post helps anyone.

Thanks

Your starter should have a heat shield on it already, unless the mech left it off the cheapo starter -

pull it and have it bench tested.

Also, check out following to ensure the starter was installed/op correctly;

Replacement Instructions, etc.; PMGR (Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction) 92-96 Source: by BLADE262US at Ford Bronco Zone Forums

I prefer Motorcraft Brand

Can wrap the starter as you figured...

or use hi qual HVAC insul to do same in lieu of $ custom wrap; such as Thermo-Tec $24.95 or Hushmat $17.99...

insul headers...
