I don't think anyone mentioned the soft coupler or "rag joint" between the steering shaft and the steering box. This could be a source for a lot of slop if it is wore out.
The track bar bushings are usually the #1 culprit. Stand beside your truck with the drivers side window open and the engine running. With the tires straight ahead, visually pick a point of reference between the bottom of the front fender and the top of the tire. Reaching in through the window, turn your steering wheel back and forth. If the truck moves sideways at all, there is wear in the bushings. Over 1/2" of sideways movement and I would change them for sure. If they are really bad, don't be surprised to see an inch or more.
