Hello All,
I just acquired a '72 Bronco and am diving in! The Bronco sat for several years (fortunately inside) and so I have some work ahead of me. First, I've worked on cars for twenty years and currently own three classics, so I'm not a stranger to projects. However, I have no experience with Broncos or four wheel drive. To make things more interesting, I have very little background/history on this truck. It is a 302 V8, 3-speed manual, but is not all stock. So far the mods I've found (or am aware of) are Edelbrock intake, Mallory electronic ignition, and Holley four-barrel. On the fenders their is a "Sport" badge, and on the glove box an "Explorer" badge.
I had it towed to my garage and started by draining all fluids/lubes and replacing. I got it cranking, but quickly determined I had no gas flow. After replacing the fuel pump, I had it running on six cylinders. The plugs were very oil fouled--not a good sign. However, after more cleaning a replacing the plugs I have it running well on all cylinders and with little or no smoke! I do have an issue with either the fuel mix or the timing. I'm not very seasoned at working with carbs, but right now when cold (by that I mean the engine is air temperature, which is now 65 in Dallas) it takes a good 15 seconds of cranking for it to finally fire up. Once warmed up, it starts and runs easily. The other issue is that I can slowly up the revs, but if I quickly hit the accel it briefly stalls out and sometimes backfires through the carb. Any thoughts on the cause of this would be appreciated.
Next up are the brakes. Currently the pedal goes to the floor. It looks like the driver side rear wheel cylinder may have been leaking, based on residue inside the wheel. Once I can make sure it stops....on to the transmission and drivetrain.
My plans are to just get it running as a weekend toy....no plans for major overhaul or monster truck!
I'm sure I will be needing all or your expertise soon!
