Depends on what you ahev. You're not gonna get great mileage out of a 5500 pound brick on wheels.

What size engine? What tires? What gears?

Like Brad said, these things weren't designed with economy in mind. However, Brad is an all time record holder for gas milage in a Bronco :)) so He probably can help you out a bit.

We would all be interested in your secrets Brad. :-"

Good luck,

:)>-

ok, you prob have an open dana 44 up front with 3:55 gears, and a factory 9in out back with a factory traclok 3:55

you can do anything you want with this rig, as little or alot depending on your budget.

i am running a 1969 ford big block in mine which works out to be 396 cubic in

i am welded up front with 3:55 and i wheel 38 in tractor tires, and daily drive 35 in mud tires.

i get very good gas milage with mine.

i have a 33 gal tank and that lasts aprox 4days ********* wheelin.

milage is not to be expected with these broncos.

i got a buddie that has a fi 5.0 in his 78 with automatic tranny, np203 transfercase, 4:56 gears and 37in boggers, and he can def keep up to me wheelin, and get a heck of alot further than i can on the highway

so its up to you what you wanna do

Well I am planning on doing quite a bit on my 78 bronco(with the 400 -automatic transmission) this summer. I am planning a rebuild, with a different distributor, high gear ratio( if I want power--**** I will just put it in second) normal size tires (I would like to lower it--to help get the air out from under neith it(might help the air flow) As it stands now. I only get about 5 mpg. Before ,when I first got it. I had regular size tires and got about 5 mpg and then I put 33,s on it and my mpg went to about 8(couldn,t believe it myself)but I did loose power. Oh well I have about 4 months to try and think things out.Maybe I can beat Brad,s record. Maybe I will swicth engine to a 6 cylinder (I have a 85 with carb ) But I love the smooth ride and how it take to the slick roads.Oh, Buy the way, I can put my trans fer in 4 wheel drive traveing 45mph with no problem at all.

A big mileage cutter would be tire size. If you dont do any extreme wheelin' and do a fair amount of street driving, somewhere around a 31in is perfect. Another thing would be the timing chain assembly, as it was designed to meet emission standards (even back in good ol' 1978/79). a new assembly would give you more power and most likely more efficiency. I dont know what your experience level is so replacing that might be out of your league but a repair manual will walk you straight through it. Also, a smaller gear ratio in your differential would increase your top end speed, cutting down on your RPM's. I would advise against buying a new one being as it will probably get similar mileage. I personally get around 8 mpg's.

Believe it or not(mine has a 400 automatic) and it had 235,s on it when I got it and the tank leaked a little. I was getting around--5-6 mpg. Then I got this other 78 bronco that had some big 31 Kelly,s on it and the 234,s were gettiong bad,so I switched them. My mileage went to about 8 mpg,but I did loose power and not being used to the hold with the Kelly,s on the main road. I took off fast one day on 19 N in Summersville,W.Va and almost oput it on its side. Kind of hairy going down the interstate on 2 wheels. haha, but I am gonna do some changing the gears and a few other things hopeing the mileage will i=mptove.
