My 1990 Bronco has a spare tire mounted inside. I am thinking that I need more space inside and would like to mount it on the rear on the swing gate. Is there a way to mount this option on my Bronco that doesn't have the body mounts to support the tire? Can I add support to the body to support the tire?

yo SD,

WELCOME!!!

Here ya go,

"...The outside tire carrier will swap bewteen year models, although there are slight styling differences for later models. Only a real Bronco guru will notice the difference in the center-plate width and added bracing on later models. All of the carriers use a tailgate support bracket, so if your rear quarters have the holes the tailgate may have been swapped out (likely due to common rust issues). You can install just the inner support bracket for the tailgate and drill holes thru the skin if you really want to use the outside carrier. Just my $0.02, it's a bad design that puts too much stress on the quarter panel, even with a stock tire. I've seen many panels get crumpled or damaged from the carrier swinging out too far. I've purchased a few used carriers for $30-$40 to cut up into tube doors, so that will give you a ballpark figure for the yard..."

So, pull the taillight housings off and have a look at what's inside

To use the stock Bronco tail gate tire mount, you need to have the inside braces in the tail gate and in the right side 1/4 panel. The skin material is not strong enough to support the tire. The best bet way to move it to the outside if you don't already have the braces, is to have a mount fabricated that attaches to an after market heavy duty step bumper. There are some examples of ones that a few of the members have built themselves.

Good luck,
