i have a 79 bronco with a very tired very abused 351m and half busted 4spd, so in my search of a new motor and gear box i com across a carbed 460 and a 5spd out of a 92 7.3 diesel. just wondering what the transmission is and what flywheel clutch combination I should be using. is it even possible to swap these into I know the bellhouse pattern is the same but other than that not much. any ideas would be helpful.

hi there

the tranny that you have found attached to that truck is the heavy duty ZF 5 speed manual. i installed the zf into my bronco however i have the small block (302). i can't imagine the list of parts would be different, you'd just need to buy the parts meant for the 460 and the ZF.

if you want some more info with regards to my swap let me know. i'll try and help as much as i can

what year is the engine? I have no clue if that transmission will even be close to matching up with that engine block, the 429 and 460 are a 385 series ford engine that use a special big block tranny design. Double and tripple check that tranny, who knows it might work, if so then I might have to expand my list of trannies that will bolt up to my 429.

The diesel bell housing is different. That tranny will not work with a 460.

IIRC, First year for a 460 with a manual is 1983 (or was that 460 in 4x4 ?)

The 351M/400 shares the same bolt pattern as a 460 but you will need the flywheel from a 390

thanks everyone i measured the bolt pattern and it will fit, if the in-put shaft is in the right location for the crank to line up? as for mounts for the motor i have i was planning on building the rest including the driveshafts would have to be changed to fit the new length of longer transmission. how did u find out that the tranny would not work (yard ****). before i order the rest of the parts I would like to be sure. thanks.

If its from a diesel, the diesel has a totally different bell housing. If I am wrong about this you have just opened up a whole new world of possiblities for me. Firstly are you 100 percent certain it came from a diesel?

i actually bought the truck for parts for my other truck a 92.5 7.3 idi when i started measuring i figured they would mate up i have yet to take the tranny out and connect it to the 460 i have sitting in my shop. Lack of help from my so call friends that i am constantly fixing there vehicles. man i sure hope they are the same maybe this weekend i will confirm everything one way or another. What are the chances that ford had three different bellhousing for one tranny, maybe they adopted the big block bellhousing for the diesels. heres for wishing.

I'm pretty sure they are different. Like I wanna say 100 percent
I agree they are completly different bellhousing between the gasser and the diesel. I know because I needed a tranny for a 460 and did a lot of research by looking in interchange catalogs that wrecking yards use and found that the diesel is a different bellhousing.

sorry for the delay and you are all right i just really wanted to believe that it would work but i got what i had paid for the truck just by selling the flywheel to a tow truck owner operator. how sweet is that. the reason it took so long is my internet went down. sorry for the confusion
