Hi, I just joined this forum. I'm considering purchasing a bronco. I have no idea where to start, I prefer to get something older but I don't want the smaller type. I like the bigger style. Is there a guide to the different year and models? What should I look for?

I want to get off road, maybe serious at times but mostly just getting into the mud and snow?

Welcome to the Zone > . Well, what I would suggest is to check the local car adds in something like the Penny Saver, news paper, Craig's list, eBay, etc. Keep your eyes open when driving around the area, you just might find one setting in someones yard with a For Sale sigh on it. There are good ones around from any year of manufacture 1978 - 1996. The only year I would avoid is 87 due to the style of front hubs used, but that is not an insurmountable problem.

Go over the truck with a fine tooth comb looking for evidence of hidden body repair, (a small magnet inside a handkerchief) will help you fine a bondo job, ( the magnet will not stick). The main places Broncos rust out is at the bottom of the rear door post, around the wheel wells, rear corners of the front fenders, rear corner of the rear 1/4 panel, and the bottom of the tail gate. If you can, look under the truck to check out the floor boards for rust, especially on the driver side, (that is caused by the rug getting wet mainly from water brought in on shoes and boots). None of this totally disqualifies the truck, but definitely has a bearing on the price.

If you are thinking of restoring a truck, eat my heart out, but a well done 78/79 really looks great when done. Check out Freak's beautifully restored 78 http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/4037/25224. I love my 83 and am slowly restoring it. My favorites when restored are the 78/79 and 80 through 86, I just prefer the squarish look of them as opposed the more rounded look of the 87 through 96. I also prefer a carbed engine and the lack of dependence on a computer that refuses to run the engine properly, or at all, because it has a bad sensor some place.

Mainly it is a matter of personal taste and you will find people that love the 87 through 96s just as well. Of course, if you are looking for a near mint truck, the chances are better for 87 - 96. If you are looking for a beater, you can find them in all years from 78 - 96.

Good luck on your search,

:)>-

yea seabronc made some good points and i tend to agree with him on the years. the only thing i would add is to check out the trucks for sale section right in this forum. if you dont mind traveling a little for you're truck. at least that way you know it came from a well informed ford guy that hopefully took care of it! lol good luck.

Thank you. I'm sold on the 78-79. I took the day off to go look at this Bronco. http://www.lehnings.com/index.htm , it sounds like one mentioned earlier in this thread. The owner is willing to let go of it for $1500, or maybe less. It had lots of surface rust, just a little more of a fixer upper than I want at this time. I'm still looking, I hope to find something close to home, this one was only 2 hours away.

I found another Bronco, a 1978. I''ll take a look at it Friday. The owner said the engine has a rod knock when started but goes away after running for awhile. He thinks replacing rod bearings will fix this, any comments?? He also has another engine that is almost built, will have about 450 ft lbs torque. He also said the truck is in pretty good shape, no rust, it's not lifted, 33" tires, sound pretty solid. $2000. He said he has hauled engines around in the back, I'm concerned that the bed might be beat up. What would it take to replace the bed in this?

I'm changing directions. After looking at the price of the 78/79s, I'm now looking at newer broncos, like this one any comments? This one has one tire on the front that has a different tread pattern. The size is the same, but it may require a new set of tires unless I can find a replacement.

damn fine truck. fair price too. i wouldnt worry about the tread pattern if the tires are all the same size. i've got different tires on the front and back of my 84. it doesent bother it much that i notice. If you've got the money i'd get it!

Yo!

Sorry for the delay, my PC was infected; Norton let it through!!!

I find that the sellers who have maintenance records are the one's that can offer a Bronco with a better view of possible future repair costs. Those Broncos that have no maintenence records available are iffy.

If I bought any vehicle, the 1st thing I would do is to change all fluids and filters. And that costs $ too. Can you DIY or do you have a family member or friend that can help you w/a lot of repairs &/or the usual fluid/filter, spark plug type maint or repairs? That will help a lot to save $

The Bronco is a brick wall when moving down the wall; heavy and a big wide front hat in not aerodynamic.

The only thing to keep MPG decent is to reduce weight by removing add-ons and cargo area stuff and keeping tire PSI right, as well as having clean filters and good plugs, wires, rotor, etc.

We have a 96, bought it new in May 96 and basically, we "over-maintain" it...meaning 3k mile oil/filter changes & ***** all filters changed before severe duty schedules, etc.

One of the most reliable daily drivers and beach run/light off road vehicles we'ever had (incl the ex 78).

Still, we had minor problems that we addressed quickly.

Besides the usual visual, driveability and leak checks, look for:

- oil pan rust - our's formed spots @ 62k miles - sand it down and prime/paint it w/Rust Bullet

Hey Allen this is Hayes Young. I am currently trying to sell my bronco. I have a 1979 full size bronco. trail ready. hear is a list of things that i have done to it, rebuilt 351 cleveland runs great, new starter, new fuel pump, new alternator, new fuel tank, new fuel lines, new 6in susp lift, 3in body lift, new 37in cooper discovery tires, new 17 in moto metal rims, aluminum edilbrock heads, new battery, etc. that is all that i can think of at the moment. I have spent about $7500 in to it. Its blue with very minimul rust. This is a bronco that is in great condition. New axle shafts, new locking hubs, new brakes all around ($1000 dollars spent last month on all new brake every thing), dana 44 in front, ford 9in in the rear. This bronco is bad ass. O am selling due to future college costs. I will sell this truck for $4500. Must sell though man. Make me a reasonable offer and i WILL not refuse buddy. I can deliver upon request also if you give $4500. Oh also a c6 automatic transmission that shifts great. call me asap and i will email you photos of the truck
