I work out of my '82 and need to carry an extension ladder around. I poked around on the net a bit looking and haven't seen anything. Now I'm asking the experts. Is there such a thing as a rack that will mount on a Big Bronco? Obviously there's no rain gutter for a typical install. I'd drill holes if I had to. I'm fine with that. I'll even pretend it's for a canoe if I have to. Any ideas?

TIA

Well I ended up figuring it out and thought I should share what I did. I found a Yakima dealer near me and apparantly they make components for fabbing your own. I used their mounting plates for on top of the fiberglass top. That did require drilling some holes but I sealed it up with an RTV silicone and todays rain shower showed no leaks. Those plates have a lip similar to a raingutter so all I had to do was mount their normal towers on there and add a crossbar. For the front I did a typical raingutter install using their 3" taller towers which made everything level. I have to say this stuff is very sturdy and I'm sure it will stand up to my daily abuse.

Cheers,

WH

Whassssuppp ya'll?

Long time since I've talked to all my Bronco friends. Started a new job at local hospital, and I work nights...so, it's been an adjustment.

Anyway, I have this exact setup on my Bronco. It's been on there since my Dad and I installed it in 1987. Yakima makes great racks. I've used it with attachments for bicycles, a cargo box and extension ladders. Yakima makes ski racks too. If you all need a roof rack...this is definitley the way to go, as everything including the rack can be locked down to the roof of your car or truck. When I get a chance during daylight, I'll take some pics and post.

Talk to ya'll later.

Hey snowman that's pretty cool. You know of anything I could add to keep the ladders from sliding sideways? I am tieing them with rope and while I'm not going to lose them or anything on the road, I need to figure this out. By the way, I really like that I can very easily remove the racks if I'm going to go play with the truck in the woods.

Yes, the ease of removal is a very nice feature on those racks. They make an attachment for virtually anything, and your ladder is no exception. Check out the following link:

Those stops along with some ratcheting tie down straps ought to do the job. You might try just the ratcheting straps first. They hold stuff pretty snug.
